2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

I actually wonder if Cain would have to be part of a package to get Dickey. (sorry, typing package and Dickey together made me LOL). Myers can play CF too, right? Of course I'd like Frenchy gone too.

This takes the Dodgers off the table for Anibal Sanchez. Not sure if that deflates his market at all, but the only team crazy enough to give him 6 years, $100 million is now out of play.

The Rangers don't like Sanchez, so they're not a factor. Main comp now is probably Detroit, which apparently insulted Sanchez and his agent with their initial, Clark Hunt-esque offer.

Trading for R.A. Dickey and extending him a few years is a great move if you can do it for less than Wil Myers.

He could, but I would really like to use only prospects to acquire a new Dickey, and we have the chips to do it.

No need to weaken the ML roster. Plus, I might die if Dyson sees considerable PT in '13. He's a nice tool off the bench, but he's easily exposed when seeing the field too much.

Jim Bowden saying if the Dodgers don't reach an agreement tonight with Ryu Hyun-Jin, they're back in play for Sanchez. Now, I'd expect them to get it done with Hyun-Jin, but who knows.

Not even sure how much value Cain has at this point. If he played all of last year with decent #'s he'd be in play imo

Do we say any 2 prospects other than Myers for Dickey? That's still pretty expensive in terms of prospects, but perhaps worth it.

If we truly believe that we can make a run at this thing in the next 2-3 years, the answer must be yes.

If they do that, I guess they're just saying "Screw it" in regards to the luxury tax.

Would be surprising to me.

If you can get them to do it for Yordano Ventura and Jorge Bonifacio, I think that works.

Would be interesting to see what happened if they asked for Bubba Starling in the package. I'd take Ventura off the table at that point and offer a much less valuable secondary piece at that point. Considering all the risk tied up in Bubba, I'm not sure using him as a trade chip is a bad idea.

Hard to say if that's a decent value return for him, though. He has the tools to hit like Matt Kemp with elite, GG-level defense from the CF spot.

I still think we're likely to trade a bullpen piece (Holland, Herrera, Collins, Crow) in these deals. And I'm OK with that. Deal from strength.

It's a nice option to sweeten a deal.

Crow probably has the most value. I'm sure there's a team out there that still thinks he can be a starter.

Starling isn't going anywhere, the Royals like him more than Myers from what I've read. He's also got a 7M bonus already paid in full so it's hard to just walk away from that before you even really get to see what he has.

Of course the Royals would do Ventura+Bonafacio. Not sure the Mets would, unless they really are building for the future. I'd think Toronto or someone else (Rangers?) would beat that offer.
