Her
Caught it yesterday, and I gotta say it was one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Thought it was a really poignant commentary on the world today, and where we're going in the future. Fantastic performances, tons of emotion, just really well done.

It was a great movie. I am glad Phoenix stopped living whatever character he portrayed for a few years. He is a talented man. I loved him in The Master.

The movie is sad and depressing but it is damn good. Juaqin Phoenix is a fantastic actor. Spike Jones did a masterful job directing. I agree with Reaper it's behind 12 years a slave as best movie all year.

You think so? I really think American Hustle is the best film I have seen this year... well from January of 13 to January of 14. I would then say Her is next, followed by 12 years a slave.
Personally, I have problems with slave films and holocaust films. I love them if they are great, which 12 years is, but it is emotion porn, where they tell a story so damaging to your nerves and emotions, that upon your exit you decide it is the best thing ever. Is it great? Yes. Did I love it? Yes. My nod goes to American Hustle. Everything was so tight in it. The script was amazing, and perfectly directed by Russell.
Spoiler!
Part of this may be the recency effect or some thing similar since I saw American Hustle 2 weeks ago or so, and 12 years several months ago. But in my explanation above (major spoilers) I think I have reaffirmed to myself why I think AH is the best of the year.

Watched this last night. Weird, highly entertaining, and visually cool. A depressing look at our not-to-distant future. I thought they really portrayed what the future of AI might look like.

I was disappointed with American Hustle. Thought it was okay, but nothing special.

American Hustle pissed me off, actually. It's very entertaining, and the performances are top-notch. But it is an empty film. It is about nothing. It stands for nothing. It's just a bunch of shit that audiences love -- crazy costumes & hair, tits, drug use, plot twists, crime & capers -- without any purpose.
The only way I can get behind American Hustle beyond simple ****ing popcorn entertainment is if David O. Russell was specifically trolling both audiences and the Academy by showing us all that what we really crave in movies is something that you don't have to think about at all. But I don't think he's that cynical, given the feel-good nature of Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter. |
