Summoning all back pain sufferers to this thread!

Quick background before the bad back problem:

-I'm 55 1/4 years old
-Lost 85 pounds in the last 18 months and only 15-20 pound away from recommended weight. Did it through exercise at gym and good diet.
-I'm muscular and active at the gym and golf
-Very few medical issues; two detached retinas, one in each eye. Operations on both eyes, right 14 and left 16 years ago
-No stitches in my life
-No real issues for the most part with any major health issues or any broken bones except fracture of my hand when I got into a fight in high school and punched a kid about 20 times in the head

Back issue:

Over the last 18-24 months I began having some MINOR discomfort and morning pain in my left hip. It went away after warming up and walking around, never preventing me from any activity or event.

Fast forward to the last 2-3 weeks.
-Suddenly I begin having this sporadic shocking pain that lasts a few seconds just above my left hip then lessens. Didn't think much of it as I am aging and just think it's a muscle strain. Over the last two weeks it has become so severe so quickly that if I move or position myself in a bad way it's like someone is sticking a cattle prod in my lower back and I buckle. I nearly have tears in my eyes and the pain is substantial, just below my Pancreatitis and Gout, the two worst and most painful things I've ever had.

My fear is that with my bad posture over the last 20-25 years working at a desk on a computer along with my recent overly aggressive gym workouts and golf, I have screwed up my back really bad.

I know the Sciatic and a herniated disc can be really painful.

I'm hoping someone can share some insight who has suffered from a bad back that is not the result of an accident or work injury.

Thanks in advance and while I typed this I moved he wrong way and was shocked with the pain!

Give it a couple weeks. I've found that chiropractor is a waste of money cause the body healed itself in time anyway.

Load up on fish oil too.

If it turns out to be sciatica you are screwed. Little Mexican buddy of mine has that and he's only 100 lbs.

I understand asking for insights, but there are a lot of different types of back pains.

It like asking for advice on why your car doesn't start and somebody offers that they replaced alternator and that solved all the problems. Yup, that might fix it.

So I have knocked my spine out of alignment several times. Having a chiropractor pop it back into place works. I didn't have to go two times a week for years. One visit, popped it back in.

I have had the lower back sprain of the type that you get from bending over and picking up a heavy object. That mostly just takes time. If the muscles are all tight, heat pads, alcohol (I'm not being snarky), massages, and anti-inflammatories like Naproxen, or prescription muscle relaxants can help. Good posture and strengthening the core muscles can help. And get somebody else to pick up heavy objects and if you can't do that, bend your ****ing knees like you are supposed to.

I have had a pinched nerve. For the shooting pains, sciatic nerve condition. You go see a specialist. They take various imaging tests. They scratch their butts and say, yeah, things look a little messed up but that is true of everybody your age. Why don't you give it six months and see if it gets better. We can try surgery but it has as much chance of making it worse as it does of making it better.

For degenerative conditions, see shooting pains above.

Glad you clarified that your 2 detached retinas were not in the same eye socket. That really would have been a medical problem.

So I appreciate the cross-thread humor. But if you have an association between back pain and something like constipation/urinary problems, erectile problems, that is something that freaks the doctors out. Fortunately, I don't know the details, but that is something I have gotten asked every time I have complained to my doctor about back pain/pinched nerves.

Damned if I know exactly what you ought to do. I will suggest that the most important thing you ought NOT do is to begin to take powerful pain killers before you've exhausted all other options. Pain is nothing more than the body's way of asking for a change of conditions. Try all the changes you can try before you just tell your body to shut the hell up and quit complaining.

Good luck.

Google cauda equina syndrome. That's why they always ask.

I couldn't agree any more with this statement, even if the guy is a donktard fan. When no OTC meds worked, when injections stopped helping, and when PT did nothing I turned to opiates (prescribed). They themselves can only do so much. I've been on these ****ing things for 13-14 months now and am just as excited to get off these as I am from the prospect of relief from my upcoming surgery. I can no longer go much more than 12 hours without taking them before they start to to present their own fun problems.. Opiate withdrawal is every bit as bad as my pinched nerves, herniated discs, and ****ed up si joints/hips. I'd highly recommend never starting them and wish I never had. They absolutely help but I'm now hooked on pills after I'd been clean/sober for 10-11 years

A lot of chiropractors are salespeople. I hate a good portion of them honestly. And I am one But if they set you up for a 24 visit treatment plan on day one, sell you supplements, offer you pre-pay discounts and the like then walk out. Find a good one, give them 2-3 visits/week for 2 weeks. If you're not feeling substantially better at that point, then you're barking up the wrong tree.

I usually tell my patients in a similar situation, give me 4 visits and if we're not making good progress or at complete resolution, let's talk about at least co-managing care with another provider. Next step if chiro doesn't work is MRI. That'll show any protrusion or extrusion of the disc. Once you know, other options are now available....pain management, surgery, etc. I will say I'm not a big advocate of lower back surgery, definitely not fusion.

Also, start stretching. If you go to a chiropractor, they should be giving you stretches. Most important muscles to stretch are the leg muscles, as they all attach to the pelvis, which is the foundation for your lumbar spine. Work on piriformis, hamstrings and hip flexors specifically. YouTube is a great source if you want to start that portion now.
Do all of this. I'm a librarian at at a chiropractic college and I have a spondylolisthesis in my lower back that causes the same symptoms if I'm not careful and "tweak" it. Stretches and a few visits to the clinic at work, and I'm good as new.

We have a tens device and more often than not it can solve the issue and Dave a trip to the back cracker.

Tens devices are awesome. Ours is portable so you can still walk around.

Get referrals if you go to a chiropractor.

Some of them are miracle workers because they know what NOT to do.

A bad visit to an incompetent one can make you worse.

Most of them will do stuff to your neck, but since I broke 2 verts in my neck back when I was 14 (well, I mean, actually an abusive adult broke my neck when I was 14) and never had surgery, it's a bit of a mess. DO NOT TOUCH.
