2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

It seems as if the Brewers, Royals and Red Sox are leading the charge to sign Ryan Dempster, with the Cubs apparently out of the running. Here's the latest on the Canadian right-hander...

Dempster turned down a two-year, $25MM deal from the Red Sox, reports Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston (Twitter link). This was slightly less than the Royals' recent two-year, $26MM offer that was also rejected, as Dempster is looking for a three-year contract.
Dempster will sign with the first team to offer him a three-year deal, tweets Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The Brewers were also looking to sign Dempster to a two-year deal but aren't willing to go longer for starting pitching contracts.

Really don't know why Dempster thinks he's gonna get more then 2 years.

I'd pass on Dempster too as well.

You are obviously a troll who either wont or cant fairly evaluate one of our best hitters for whatever reason. Have fun with that.

So don't value him! I'm fine with him staying in KC.

Why not a 'block buster' deal to set off the new season:

Jake Arrieta (don't need him)
Brian Matusz (could be replaced by Koji Uehara)
Tommy Hunter (Sanders will fill that role)
Robert Andino (KC has several 2B and Andino would be a head over them all)
Wilson Betemit (switch hitter to replace missing bats)
Chris Davis (pitchers are on to him, will hit 35 homers and 'K' 200+)

for

Billy Butler (at firstbase, needs to keep weight at 230)
Alex Gordon (solid healthy left fielder)
Sal Perez (backup Wieters, firstbase, DH probably the best hitter of both the Royals/Orioles)
2 Minor Leaguers (best infielder they have 3 years away and one pitcher)

There's no way the O's would go for that without Myers, then it's a fair deal.

We might have to part with Alcides so they can replace Hardy some day. Here's another good one:

Arrieta plus a low-A prospect should be enough to get it done. Schoop was about league average with the bat last year as a 20 year old. He's a top-100 prospect. If we're trading him for Butler, we shouldn't be trading anything else.

Yes you heard that right: the AS Royal who was #8 player in the league in runs created (ahead of their beloved Adam Jones) is only worth a former top-100 prospect named "Schoop".

Throw in the rights for Billy Ripken and it's done. Second base solved. BOOM.

Yeah, those sound about right.

It is the most delusional, ill-informed fan-base I have ever seen. It will even worse for about 2 months this season, until the same thing happens that always happens with Showalter teams - the message fades. He's a good manager for rebuilding teams, but he burns bright and flames out early. Once the luck runs out and they go .500 in the 1-run games, they'll end up an also-ran again and the O's fans will scurry back into the woodwork.

Though I will say this for the O's, I'm really looking forward to seeing Machado and Bundy over the next couple of years.

So I'm guessing you don't think adding Johnson and Buerhle helped fix the pitcher shittiness issue from last season.

Not enough players. Every Orioles fan knows that the way to get a good player is to give up a TON of really shitty players.

You'll need to include Chen and Getz, for starters. Brett Hayes, Tony Abreu and Irvin Falu are going to need to be in there as well, oh yeah, and Moscoso - because the Royals need an arm (everyone always needs an arm).

And don't forget Bourgeois, because the Orioles need some team speed and Terry Evans, because a good Orioles trade has to include a flash in the pan that can 'really recapture his form'. Finally, you'll need someone that you used to think might be good but clearly sucks...I'm thinking David Lough looks good and then another young AAAA prospect - afterall, the Orioles need to get younger (everyone always needs to get younger); Yowill Espinal should do that nicely.

So, here's a perfect trade for the Royals:

Hochevar
Francouer
Chen
Moscoso
Getz
Hayes
Abreu
Falu
Bourgeois
Evans
Lough
Espinal

for:

Jones (because they won't be able to re-sign him)
Bundy (hey, you gotta give to get)
Machado (he's blocked by Hardy, no room for him to play)
Gausman (he's closer to the show than Bundy and for this many immediate major leaguers that are in their prime years, we'll need someone that can contribute this year)

Then finally you'll need to decide that including Falu and Chen is too much to give up, but if they include Schoop or kick in some cash to cover Jones' salary, you'd probably go ahead and pull the trigger.

If Johnson can take the bump, he's a very good pitcher, but it's hard to say what you're going to get in him.

I fully expect Buehrle to literally die on the mound at the Rogers centre (that is how they spell it up there, yes?). He's a bad fit for that division and a worse fit for that ballpark. Buehrle is an NL pitcher; he needs that chance to face the pitcher, regroup and continue to 'bend but don't break' as he goes back through the order. The waves of hitters he'll face in the AL will really hurt him, IMO.

The only thing that will fix the pitcher shittiness issue from last season is 200+ innings from Morrow, Ricky Romero discovering the strike zone and maybe Dustin McGowan getting a shoulder transplant. They'll need to get more of a boost internally than they'll get from Johnson/Buehrle if they hope to move forward.
