Putting down the bottle.

How many of you have done this? I'm starting to notice a pattern of me screwing shit up in my life and there always seems to be something involved.

Alcohol

I love drinking

But I'm sick of screwing up relationships and generally being a dumbass.

How many of you have done this? I feel like it's time (at least for a while) to cut the booze out of my life.

Any advice on what to do other than spend my weekend wasted drunk?

I'm not going to bump this thread to commemorate every milestone or anything.. I'm doing this to better myself and not for attention and rep points.

But I feel as if I took the second step toward a better me. I took that $100 I would have spent on booze and bought some nice running shoes.

Running. Blows.

The end.

My wife likes to drink on the weekends and it drives me crazy. The moment i see a change in her from the alcohol I just wanna slap the shit out of her. I can't help it. It annoys me so much. Seeing drunks...get drunk is like nails on a chalk board for me now.

I can't explain it. It's so weird. I just get filled with so much anger the moment i have to deal with someone who's buzzed...not even drunk...buzzed.
That's a problem. You need some kind of therapy. Don't let your father continue to screw up your life by damaging the relationship that you have with your wife and others.

this is pretty much what I did...kinda.
6pack a day mon-thurs
12pack a day fri-sun

every day, from the time I was 22-23 years old. I'm 53 now.

last june I just decided to change. instead of getting home and popping one, I went home and walked. started w/a mile, then 2,3,etc. Monday thru Thursday I'd walk instead of drink. then, I started walking on weekends...don't know why, outside of the fact that I'm a creature of habit.

I'm up to 6miles (walk 4.75/run 1.25) 6days a week. no booze at all mon thru thurs. Fridays - my days...no walk, and i'll drink a few beers. sat and sun, maybe a couple.

but...I know that if I'd skip the walk, I'd want to crack a brew. just the way I am, I guess.

after about 9 months, I still hate walking/running. but the habit's been started and hopefully replaces what I was doing before.

good luck, and congrats and respect to sr and the others that have stated that they've been able to quit for as long as they have.

sec

My best friend of 30 years died of alcoholism just a few months ago. He was 46 years old. And he wasnt the drunk dude at the bar being obnoxious, he wasnt even Nick Cage Leaving Las Vegas drunk guy. No, he was the healthiest dude you knew for 4 months, then he'd binge like youve never seen for 5 days, drinking everything under the sun that had alcohol in it, including mouthwash and hand sanitizer. His body would be in the best of health for months, and then he'd beat the shit out of his insides for 5 days, then sober up and get healthy for months, and then...wash, rinse repeat. It as bad becasue he could hide it, non one truly knew, me included, til it was too late.

When he was younger, teenager thru mid 30s, he could drink like the rest of us, and then his disease turned. No idea why really, all we know is he could ever go back to drinking like everyone else.

He binged like that for roughly 10 years, but his insides could no longer take it. He went into renal failure, which led to cardiac arrest, then brain damage. I was at his side as he passed. Literally the most devastating and yet the most beautiful thing I have ever experienced. Being there with him was a gift.

To give you a clear idea when this happened, I was kind of watching the KC vs Giants game in the Honolulu airport en route to Maui when it was time to take him off life supportand a week later, just before his 'Celebration Party" I watched the titans game from a park in Maui around 7am, while in his car. he understood my love for the Chiefs LOL

Anyways, Im not big fan of alcohol right now. He was the absolute love of my life, and Ive been struggling with the grieving, and Im a tad angry at addiction and its devastation. But it is a reality of life, and none of us are truly free of it, even if you arent an addict.

Hope you find the strength to get your drinking in a place that you can live a healthy life, even if that includes eliminating it from your life.

Good luck!
Anyone struggling with addiction would do well to heed this advice. It's spot on.

Great post.

I spent most of my 20's in bars and drinking. Like 6 nights a week, and not just 4 or 5 beers. Beers and usually some kind of liquor. Looking back I don't really know how I made it to work most days. Eventually I just grew out of it I guess. Got married, had kids and a house. And it would take me a lot longer to recover the next day. I don't have time to be walking around in a fog after a night of drinking.

I do remember that at the end of my hard drinking days there were nights where I couldn't remember what happened. That never used to happen; in fact, when people would say, "I don't remember what happened last night," I thought it was BS. That they just didn't want to admit they were acting stupid. But then it started happening to me and I didn't like that feeling.

Anyway, I just don't have time for it anymore. Don't like to drink in front of my kids. I get up early every day and almost never have time to sit and drink more than one beer.

I'll still have a beer but it's rare that I would have more than 2 in a day.

Been there I take it?

I've been learning a lot through thru others and their experience with loss. I'm a rookie at grieving. It's a weird deal.

Hey man, if it helps, bump the **** out of this. I don't think anyone will stack the shit on you. AFAIK most have been really supportive of this kind of thing. So have at it. Bump away!

Glad you took my advice on buying something nice. Although I was thinking steak dinner or TV or something. I'm not buying any damn running shoes as a reward .

As a word to the wise, you can get a lot if repetitive stress problems if you only run. I ran cross country in high school and put on some weight in college so I ran to get it off and shin splints about killed my ass. Now I have plantar fasciitis also. It's probably just my body being a used up piece of shit, but I had problems when I ran hard every day. Let me know if you have some problems. I've tried most everything in the book.

Tired - OK
Sore muscles - OK
Joint/soft tissue/structural pain - pay attention.
