Not a rumor: Ryan Lilja may be returning to KC

EDIT: No longer a rumor. The Chiefs have reportedly reached out to Lilja.

We're three deep at guard, however. If this is true, I think this portends ugly things for Rodney Hudson's recovery. I think the Chiefs may be angling for a patch at center.

I've never had inside information before, but today I do. It's weird - and it was from out of the blue today - but I have it on good authority that Ryan Lilja is negotiating with the Chiefs to return for the 2013 season. That isn't to say that he would make the cut for the active roster after training camp, but I'd say he's got a damn good shot at that. What would you think to have Lilja back in the fold?

Now, cross-reference those results with the guys that have the mediocre skill set that Alex Smith has.

Let's back up just a second. What do you think my argument is? It has nothing to do with rarity or Alex Smith's demonstrated skills.

Wrong. My argument is that the window for a franchise QB who fully realizes his potential doesn't close abruptly at the end of his prime years. In this case, I'm accepting for the sake of argument that Alex Smith's prime years will end at age 33, but the truth is that it's different for each QB. And, of course, injury can always be a factor.

And you don't have to be John Elway to have an open window beyond 33. Trent Green's window was open beyond 33. The Chiefs' lack of success during those twilight years had more to do with defense, the end of Priest Holmes, the retirement of Willie Roaf, and a career truncating injury than it had to do with Trent's 34th birthday. Alex Smith may never have the modest success of Trent Green (aside from the fact that he already has some playoff success), but he certainly has at least as much potential.

Brett Favre with Minnesota can either fit Patteu's view or be viewed as an aberration.

I personally don't have a firm shake on the matter, other than I do agree that most QBs hit their prime b/w 26-33, as they have usually hit their athletic primes and have a solid understanding.

No doubt about it. The discussion started with the phrase "best case" though. The odds are certainly against any QB winning a championship in his mid to late 30s.

I don't really think you understand this topic. You're too focused on hindsight whereas this is all about potential, whether it's ever realized or not.

BTW, there is a long list of QBs who fit my hypothesis, but the only thing bothering to list them will do is give you a launching pad for applying hindsight and arguing about whether or not the list proves anything. Trent Green is a representative member of the list though, as I mentioned earlier. Do you agree that his window was open beyond age 33?

Not true.

Jim Plunket was one of the QBs beyond the age of 33 to win.

But the sample size suggests that Alex Smith winning a SB beyond the age of 33 is a slim chance.

Plunket wasn't an elite QB, but his physical skillset was higher than Smith's.

I'd also like to mention that Alex Smith has NEVER shown the ability to be a guy like Trent Green.

Trent attacked every part of the field...Alex Smith doesn't.
