With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:



Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Honestly the one I like the most is probably Brandon McCarthy of the A's.
King Felix is down a bit this year, and of course we have all talked about Greinke, not that we'd trade to take him back.

I think we probably don't make any big moves. Just being able to call up guys like Myers and Odorizzi and getting Cain and Perez back from injury should provide a nice boost to the roster.

I wouldn't be opposed to renting Brandon McCarthy for a few months, then seeing if they can get him locked up to a longer deal.

The A's aren't going to get a comp pick for him unless they offer him a deal that pays him $12.5 million in year 1, which is probably unlikely.

Little bit different situation than, say, Anibal Sanchez, who definitely is worth $12 million/year and might take that.

Not sure what Beane would want for him, but he doesn't have nearly as much leverage as in the past. Something like David Lough + Louis Coleman + Tim Melville might be enough to get that done.

I'd take McCarthy or Sanchez. I was hoping we might be able to lockup a guy like Sanchez in free agency this offseason. However, if we need to move some guys to get it done this year and then take our best shot at a long term deal, so be it.

I'm a little hesitant with McCarthy because of the shoulder soreness this year.

I can't imagine that the asking price on Felix would ever get much lower (given just a mediocre year last year and a pretty poor last month), but I still wonder how much it would take. Felix strikes me as the buy low guy right now. He's signed at almost $20 million per year through 2014, though, so that's a lot of our future payroll.

I'd love to just get to that 5 games under .500 spot. Seems to be a tough place for us to reach

I figure if they're close enough to make a deal at the deadline and acquire some pitching, you target one of the guys you might look at in FA and try to get the deal done.

Yordano Ventura+the package I just mentioned (or maybe throwing in Chris Dwyer in place of Melville) might move the needle for the Cubs on Matt Garza (unlikely, since he's got 1.5 years left).

Showing some signs of aggression and willingness to spend at the deadline would go a long way towards making KC a more attractive FA destination, I'd think.

Dream world: Trade for Garza now, sign a similar pitcher in FA, and be ready to contend next season.

LOL I just looked up the highlights and saw that. A little attitude from a Royals player... how about that! He pounded hands/forearms awfully hard with whoever he met at the plate too... obviously fired up. I saw that and said damn Billy don't put another guy on the DL, heh.
