#bringbackourgirls

So I'm kind of fascinated by a cultural discussion that is happening around this whole "#bringbackourgirls" thing.

On one side, you've got Rush Limbaugh, sounding a little callous:
I just think this is pathetic. I'm just stunned. We got 300 Nigerian girls kidnapped by an Al-Qaeda group, and nobody cared or talked about it for a while. Hillary wouldn't call 'em a terror group. Now, all of a sudden, for some reason, we're on a big push to get 'em back and this is how...? Well, you can't read the writing. It's a plea for people on Twitter to get in gear and bring the girls back. It's #BringBackOurGirls. Apparently there's a Twitter... What do you call 'em, handle? It's the number sign
"BringBackOurGirls." (interruption) It's a hashtag, okay.

Anyway, there's Mrs. Obama looking sad and grim, and the sad thing here is that the low-information crowd that's puddling around out there on Twitter is gonna think we're actually doing something about it. (interruption) Exactly. Yeah, they'll say, "At least she is trying, Mr. Limbaugh. What are you doing? At least Mrs. Obama cares! At least they're trying to get them back."

Here it is again, closer. See it? Is that not pathetic? What the hell message does that send? Imagine if bin Laden were still alive. Imagine Ayman al-Zawahiri. Can you imagine? They're laughing at this over in the huts and so forth wherever they are. It is just unbelievable. #BringBackOurGirls. They're Nigerian, unless there's something that we don't know.

But are we really this powerless? The correct way to look at this is the audience that will see it -- the Twitter, low-information universe -- will say, "Oh, Mrs. Obama! At least they care, and at least they're trying to do something."
On the other side, I guess you've got Michelle Obama, who is doing the radio address this week to "demand justice for Boko Haram kidnap victims."

The question that I have about all this is "to what end?" I don't particularly like Rush Limbaugh. He's tone deaf at the very least. But isn't it also tone deaf to hold up a sign for twitter without any real call to action? This reminds me a lot of the #occupywallstreet stuff, where they call a bunch of people to "raise awareness" - but that's the extent of the call to action.

I don't understand what this is supposed to accomplish. As a father, I feel terrible about these girls, but I would be disgusted if the extent of the people with the power to do anything about it basically turned that loss into a branding campaign for how in touch and compassionate they are.

The president is acting unconstitutionally. This has nothing to do with national defense. Public hysteria over Boko Harem is counterproductive. We're all over the freakin' planet for gosh sakes! Don't Americans have any concern for our own demise with another intervention? I guess not.

Also, this is the stated purpose for putting our military in Nigeria. There's always another purpose behind such moves. And I'll just bet that this increase in international attention, including our military in there, draws more members for Boko Haram.

This group does make AQ look moderate. They also killed 59 school boys.

"Last week the U.S. began flying manned surveillance flights by a MC-12 Liberty military surveillance aircraft based in Niger. A few days later an unmanned Global Hawk aircraft based in Sigonella, Sicily, also joined the effort and has now been repositioned to Niger."

Nice to see that we are capable of projecting force all the way from Sicily into Niger. I mean, shoot, that's the middle of North Africa.

We can project force from Missouri into Niger. 15 years ago, the B-2's took off from Whiteman, bombed the shit out of Serbia, and flew back, during the Bosnian War. They did it again in Libya just a few years ago.

Sicily? That ain't nothin'.

Yep. As long as we have plenty of notice, we can be anywhere. I'm sure glad that nothing urgent ever happens to our people or interests in Africa.

Here's a better hint: "Nice to see that we are capable of projecting force.."
This line is the main mantra or talking point of the NeoCons--aka basking in the idea of projecting force around the world. However, I didn't just post that for these words alone. It's due to a combination of your FP stands that do not follow the non-aggression doctrine.

Oh, and your a copycat too. Very, very unoriginal. Then again, it is the sincerest form of flattery!

OK, here's an even better hint: Sometimes people use irony.

Oh, and you have my FP stands completely backwards in your head because of those ridiculous mental gymnastics you've been performing in the Ukraine thread. My condemning Putin for his acts of aggression doesn't make me someone who condones aggression. That's actually a pretty stupid stance to stake. And still you continue your doublespeak here in this thread. If anything you made the argument against Ukraine being a sovereign country at all-thus justifying Putin's aggressive FP. You made your bed. Lie in it.

Guess some people have no trouble adding to those waiting lists in our VA hospitals with another military intervention. I feel sorry for those troops.

I will quote Judge Andrew Napolitano: “Feeling sorry for somebody is not a sufficient basis for sending American men and women into harm’s way.”

Obama is using another military intervention to handle the unrest aggravated by his Libyan intervention.
