Kansas City barbeque

http://economy.kansascity.com/?q=node/2070

New Orleans has its gumbo. Philadelphia has its cheesesteaks. Boston its seafood. And Kansas City’s culinary claim to fame? Barbecue of course!

And what barbecue, around 80 operations to choose from — spicy to sweet, bare bones dive to white tablecloth, heart of the city or afternoon drive in the country.

Here is the current list of establishments in and around KC. But barbecue fans beware, call ahead first to make sure they are open.
Got changes, additions or BBQ news? Send them to Joyce Smith at jsmith@kcstar.com

Johnny's is the best. Hands down. I'm not a big meat eater but that place turns me into a carnivore.

I had to vote for Bryants. To me Bryants put KC BBQ on the map. While it has slipped at

the other locations at the original location it's still pretty good. I love a lot of the others

too but many of them would not even be in business if not for Bryants. I have very fond

memories of Byrants over the years and they are the only BBQ place in KC that is known

nationwide. Like Buck O'Neil, Arthur Bryant is a KC legend.

The original Bryant's is just amazing. The burnt end sandwich haunts my dreams. Jack Stack is solid across the board, but other than their beans, there's not something there that really blows me away.

To my shame, I've not had OK Joes. I didn't even know about it till I had moved from KC and on my trips home, I haven't been able to make it there. I hear it's fantastic so I can't wait to try it finally.

It's gonna be life changing. If I had lived closer to OK Joes when I lived in KC, then I swear I would have added a solid 50 lbs., ha

THIS.

Had burnt end sandwiches at Bryant's the last 2 times through KC and they're easily my favorite now...

Has anyone ever had Brobecks BBQ off of 105th and Roe? They have great pulled pork, and I'm guessing it gets put through a blender/food processor. It's very good, I should also mention Fritz's Smoked Meats as a local favorite for lunch.

I'm flying into KC for the first time in just a few hours. My sister and BIL moved to Overland Park in June. I have a feeling I'm getting Oklahoma joe's for my first KC BBQ experience, but we'll see.

Just a tip (from when I went to the Olathe location):

Depending on when you're going, it might be a good idea to call ahead and order out. I went last Thanksgiving, and it was about a 1.5 hour wait to sit down. The parking lot was insane (thanks to Black Friday BS, and the location being in a huge shopping area). I called and ordered it to go, pulled up, let someone out to grab the food and pay, and we were back home eating 10 minutes later.

Pretty much the only way I ever get OK Joes. Even on 'normal' days, they are usually pretty damn busy

Went to a couple Lee's Summit locations.

Q's BBQ downtown by the post office. Had the brisket, the brisket was pretty good, but the sauce was terrible, just terrible. Tasted more like chili and it was hot. Not my kind of sauce.

Hickory Pit BBQ - Oh my, all I tasted was smoke. Smoke smoke smoke and more smoke. Screw that.

Any good Q in LS?

I've never eaten there, but I've heard good things about Filling Station BBQ.

We waited an hour and that was at 1:00 pm. The line was out the door and down the strip malls sidewalk and around the building.
