Trader Joes attracts White People.

So much for urban renewal. I guess a crack house and a busload of whores would be a way better deal.

Black residents reject Trader Joe’s because it would attract too many white people

The Trader Joe’s grocery chain has withdrawn plans to build a store in the heart of a predominantly black neighborhood after a black leadership group fought the move.

The Portland Development Commission was set to give the grocer a large discount on property that had been vacant for years, pricing it at just over $500,000, down from an appraised value of $2.9 million, according to The Oregonian.http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/i...ican_lead.html

The Portland African American Leadership Forum sent a scathing letter in December to city leaders, saying the plan would price residents out of the area and the group“remains opposed to any development in North/Northeast Portland that does not primarily benefit the black community.”

Trader Joe’s would increase displacement of low-income residents and “increase the desirability of the neighborhood,” for “non-oppressed populations,” PAALF wrote.

“[This decision] reflects the city’s overall track record of implementing policies that serve to uproot, displace and disempower our most vulnerable community members,” the letter said.

Trader Joe’s bowed out amid the controversy.

“We run neighborhood stores, and our approach is simple: If a neighborhood does not want a Trader Joe’s, we understand, and we won’t open the store in question,” a company spokesperson said in a statement to The Oregonian.

But not everyone is happy about the outcome.

“There are no winners today,” Adam Milne, owner of Old Town Brewing Co., told The Oregonian. “Only missed tax revenue, lost jobs, less foot traffic, an empty lot and a boulevard still struggling to support its local small businesses.”

Thats what I like about you. Direct, to the point, and wholesome. A role model for all. You have a simmering dislike for reality. But its neat in a fun sort of way.

Which, whatever, it's their neighborhood and they want a certain historical element to remain. This doesn't bother me. If they want to turn down jobs and money, so be it. They have to live there.

But just as it's naive to think this doesn't go on with white communities resisting minority influence, let's not pretend that those instances would be normally considered racist when brought to light.
I don't at all condone the group using the race card. And I don't know why they'd turn down a Trader Joe's. I'm just pointing to the holier than thou attitude on this thread that this is typical black race baiting, as if white people don't have a similar reaction when a business with mostly black or latino customers enters a predominantly white neighborhood.

The difference is, white people can use an economics argument, claiming that the business would destroy the neighborhood. When a poor neighborhood turns down a Trader Joe's, people can't understand why they'd turn down something that appears to be a neighborhood improvement. Even if the race card was never thrown out there, guarantee this argument on this thread would still be about race baiting. So one is passed off as economics, and the other is considered racism. They're both in their own small way racially motivated.

Can't people (probably white) take a holier than thou attitude in this thread over black race baiting when they haven't done the same thing? Or do they need to identify with a group and bear the guilt of the lowest common denominator of that group instead of being guilt-free individuals?

They simply don't need a Trader Joe's, they already have grocery stores (the pic below is just one example from New York's trendy Harlem subdivision). So if they don't want a Trader Joe's who cares?

Republicans care. (wow, that's the first time Republicans and care have ever been used together)

There are people on this thread who are in denial that this happens for all races. That is the only reason I even brought up race.

Beyond that, the big point I am still trying to understand is how people continue to insist this wasn't subsidized by taxpayers. Again, if this was a $100m appraised property sold by a public sector entity for 17m, I am sure there would be questions about government using tax dollars for sweetheart deals. So I think it's hypocritical for any advocates of limited government to try to turn this into a market value deal.
