Official 2012-2013 NBA Thread

Looks like James Harden has been To the Rockets for Jeremey Lamb, Kevin Martin and future picks. Plus... this is a general NBA thread.

MJ was better than LeBron. Barring some major turnaround in LeBron's game, it will stay that way. No, don't sell the BS which I know you will that this is a knock on LeBron. It is a compliment to a player who is one of the best players to ever play in ANY sport.
I'm not trying to do anything (nor was Charles Barkley with his "bigger, stronger MJ" comment on LJ on Thursday night). The ridiculous stats do enough of the talking on that front. If LeBron continues on at this level of dominance (and wins a few more titles along the way too), he will be very much comparable to MJ at the end of his career. That is plain to see.

I would hope everyone did at least that much. That's just stating the obvious.

So T. Ross won the slam dunk competition. That's cool, I guess. Not surprising.

Yeah, reminiscing about the past is great and all, but don't let that feeling of nostalgia ignore the history that's going on in the present.
Dude, I'm not belittling LeBron....he's playing fabulous ball right now. But my point stands. 35/6/5.5/3.2/1.6 over an 82 game season is amazing, not nostalgiac.

LeBron probably has a chance to equal Jordan in titles, if not surpass him. Even though I think the league has had a resurgence of talent, I just don't see a Celtics, Pistons or Knicks of the 80's/90's that LeBron has to contend with. At least for now. There's probably more "decent" teams now, but better than average isn't going to beat guys like Jordan, LeBron, Kobe etc. People are mocking the Pacers but they probably have the best shot at this point. The Bulls could get there if they get Rose back and get one more elite player. It may be different in 4 years.

But all things being equal, you'd still be hard pressed to take a LeBron team over a Jordan team head to head. This is where banking on statistics can become a bit fatal. There is no statistic for Jordan's rage. LeBron's never going to have that. I just don't think he's capable. It's not a knock on him. LeBron's been treated like a king since high school. Jordan had to work his tail off to even make his HS team. You just can't change that. Jordan was the perfect storm of elements coming together to create a superior athlete who spent his entire life trying to destroy everyone. There is a human element to sports. There probably always will be.
I agree 100% with you. Looking at KevB's post about Jordan's stat line it really brings home the fact that if the Jordan in his prime was playing now he would probably average 45-50ppg. Just like the NFL has neutered defenses so has the NBA. You don't have the physical play like there was when Jordan played.

I know. But as I said, if you spend too much time thinking about the past, you'll miss what's happening in the present. And what's happening in the present is LeBron James making history.

He actually did pretty well. I thought both finalists actually were excellent.

I do agree with Barkley though they need to find a way to get the stars to participate and quit being chickenshits.

You're being melodramatic. Of course I'm watching what's happening today. That's why I'm in this thread. I've also been very complimentary of LeBron, and I've been a champion of the talent right now in the league. It's as good as it's ever been. But, recalling how great Jordan was isn't nostalgic. It's just respecting what came before, and serves as a reminder for those intoxicated with the present.

It was a letdown overall, but Ross and Evans were solid. People were hoping for more from some of the other guys like White and Green. And guys that aren't household names have to go above and beyond to really capture the crowd.

You kind of made it seem as if what LeBron is doing right now wasn't as impressive as that season (and as I showed, it very much is). They're both two of the greatest to ever play the game and both dominated the game at a very similar level. MJ is the past, though, and LeBron is the present and future.

Those on my Twitter feed (at least the non Raptors fans) seemed kind of upset about it. Been kind of a letdown in terms of star participation since the VC days, I guess.

The dunk contest barely has any starters in it much less stars. I agree with Barkley on this in that the players need to give back to the fans. I personally give a shit about the game itself. Give me the best shooters and Dunkers going at it. I would LOVE to see some one on one battles. There is so much shit you can do with basketball to make the weekend incredible. Get the shoe sponsers to cough up some money to the players charities. It could be done if someone would champion the cause.

They aren't dominating the game at a similar level.

As of right now, LeBron is the most dominant player in the game. That's a big compliment. But he isn't dominating the same way Jordan did. The problem I have is that people keep saying the if LeBron keeps up his pace, he will match Jordan. That is completely false. LeBron seems like a shoo-in to be the 2nd best player of all time, when all is said and done. But no matter what the statistics may tell you, LeBron has a LOT to prove if he wants the legacy of being the kind of competitor Jordan was.
