Some thoughts on tonight's show:

I liked that the woman's name was Rousseau, yet another philosopher's name, just like Locke. Rousseau again fit the character perfectly, as the philosopher believed that humans were good in a sort of primal state untouched by civilization, and that society was the cause for the unhappiness of man. He also thought that science hurt mankind, and it was the advancement of thought that gave the government the power to oppress people. He believed that love for fellow man was instead replaced with paranoia or fear.

The character Rousseau didn't trust Sayid, and in the end warned him of his mates, and was also in a way hurt by science because that was the reason she came to the island.

We also found out that the missing Alex was her child. And in the previews for the next show, Claire thinks someone tried to hurt her unborn baby, so there could be a connection.

What the **** was the power cord doing stretching out into the ocean? The entire time I'm watching the show from the point Sayid sees it, that's in the back of my mind. I really hope they explain that.

Maybe I'm thinking too hard, but if Rousseau could speak not only french, but english and spanish, why did she broadcast her message in only one language? Then again, 16 years on an island, it's possible she had some books to learn them all.

The two characters introduced (guy hunting with Locke, guy with rash) will play a bigger role I think. Generally in a show like this, people aren't given lines for no reason. In fact, its been said that there is someone on the island that wasn't on the plane (aside from Rousseau). It'd be funny if mystery man was the guy hunting with Locke, though that'd be a stretch. Still, I can see that twist happening.

I really hope this show goes beyond a redoing of the plot of John Carpenter's "The Thing." In "The Thing" it's a virus that takes over the host body and mutates into a creature. The giant monster walking around the island could be someone infected with the virus. Just a theory though.

Damn I love this show. It's one of the very few shows I look forward to watching.

Glad I saw this thread. I'm absolutely hooked on this show. It's got suspense, intrigue and some hot chicks. I've read that Kate will be shown wearing next to nothing sometime later in the season. And the blonde sister fills out that bikini quite nicely.

I like how they slowly introduce new characters as the season goes along. There's enough survivors on the island to keep the introductions going for several seasons. Brilliant idea.

I think we'll be seeing Danielle as a recurring character. She'll become like the monk on the mountain top. Whenever they need advice or knowledge, they'll seek her out.

I think it's also a good idea not to overplay the main characters, especially Doc/Kate. that could get tired very quickly. But notice how the writers are having Kate show some interest in the scumbag. I see a love triangle happening here.

Now we have to wait for 2 weeks before the next episode.

Mystery man is Tom Cruise's cousin.

That was an amazing surreptitious butt shot. As she went to get up from the beach, she developed a massive case of plumber's butt.

Star's sexy other career not `Lost' on savvy viewers
By Lauren Beckham Falcone
Tuesday, November 16, 2004

Evangeline Lilly may be ``Lost'' on ABC, but you can find her on late-night TV and online anytime, bare-bellied and hawking a ``fun, flirty'' telephone dating service, www.livelinks.com.

Lilly, who stars as the sweaty escaped convict Kate on the network's hit show about plane crash survivors, once studied international relations at the University of British Columbia, but she's apparently settled on helping the young and dateless with the International Language - love.

The 25-year-old actress is spokeswoman and feature model for the very sexy service, which hooks up singles via telephone.

Talk about letting your fingers do the walking.

``Phone Livelinks Chatline and within seconds, you'll be talking to women or men in your local area!'' the Web site promises, as Lilly, looking decidedly un-marooned in a low-cut white blouse and blown-out hair, chats on a phone, her demure smile beckoning callers.

Fans of the show are abuzz about the beauty's alter ego.

``It's kind of funny because all the other models are really slutty,'' said one blogger on a ``Lost'' fan site. ``You should see the commercials. Scantily-clad women telling you to call in sultry voices.''

Lilly was discovered three years ago in British Columbia by a Ford model scout, but declined a career in high fashion to go to college. When she got her tuition bill, however, Lilly changed her mind and signed with the agency.

Still, she didn't think modeling or acting would stick, according to an interview with People magazine.

``(I studied) international relations because I wanted to be a missionary,'' she told the weekly rag.

While at the U of BC, she founded and ran a world development and human rights committee and went to the Philippines with a missionary group.

``Lost'' is her first starring role. She was featured briefly on Stephen King's now-canceled series ``Kingdom Hospital,'' but was killed off before she became the darling of ``Lost's'' desert island.

Actor's past helps on 'Lost'
By Terry Morrow
Scripps Howard News Service

During his lean years, actor Josh Holloway pulled a con on his department-store employers that would make his "Lost" character, the shady Sawyer, proud.

Josh Holloway

He and friends shoplifted merchandise from the store where they worked, then returned it for a refund. They took home thousands of dollars, which helped Holloway through a semester of college. Management never caught on, and in fact loved the hardworking Holloway, he says.
"I was ripping the place off blind, and I left the job as employee of the month," he admits during a phone interview.
Like the self-involved Sawyer, whose cockiness and selfishness irritate the castaways on the hit series (7 p.m., Wednesdays, ABC/Ch. 4), Holloway knows how to survive when money is tight.
It's not a side of he easily admits to or is even proud of, he says, though he understands where it came from. Holloway grew up in rural northern Georgia, about 75 miles outside of Atlanta. His father was a surveyor and his mother was a stay-at-home wife and mother. He and his family lived in a trailer most of his childhood.
"Coming from a poor family, I had the ability to exist, and thrive even, with no money," he says. "I am used to existing without a base, like education, to fall back onto."
Holloway attended college briefly but dropped out for financial reasons. He moved to New York City to expand his horizons and escape Georgia. Then he went to Italy — again without money — and drifted.
"I've done some things that are shady," he says.
After he came back to the United States, he worked as a model and then an actor. Before "Lost," he worked mainly B-movies and hoped for a big break.
Now that success has come, Holloway, 35, says wrapping his head around it has been dizzying.
When he auditioned for the role of Sawyer, he was confident he'd get the part.
"Sawyer is an aspect of me. He's an aspect in you," Holloway says. "He's an aspect in everybody, but I just blow it up for the character. He is not the nicest guy in the world, and now he has to struggle with his redefinition on this island."
"Lost" centers on the survivors of a plane crash on a deserted and mysterious island.
"You find a door for a character, and you exist in it," says Holloway. "I can't just put it on and play a bad guy. . . . You have to exist in someone like this. You let your own life experiences come through that. It's fun because it's an exploration into that side of me."
He hasn't been back to his hometown, where his parents still live, since "Lost" premiered, but he says he is eager to go. "Everybody will start giving me (a hard time)," he says with a laugh.
Now living in Hawaii, where "Lost" is shot, Holloway finds himself laughing out loud when he recollects his down-and-out days.
"I have my moments when I can't believe where life has taken me," he says. "It's amazing. It still has not sunk in that much."

'Lost' finds mix of realism in cast

Television executives like to talk about "colorblind casting," a process that more often than not produces series pilots that are blindingly white. So how did ABC's Lost manage to create one of TV's most diverse casts right from the beginning?

"I don't think it was colorblind. . . . I think it was color-conscious" casting, says Harold Perrineau (Oz), who plays Michael, a father getting to know his young son (Malcolm David Kelley).

Besides the African-American father and son, the cast includes an Arab character (played by Naveen Andrews, a British actor of Indian descent) and a Korean couple, stranded together on an island after their flight crashes. Plus, there's actor Jorge Garcia, whose character, Hurley, may not be Latino but adds diversity of his own as one of the larger characters on TV.

"Hey, that's what the world looks like. It doesn't look like The O.C.," Perrineau says. "From my point of view, the world looks like the island."

"What's cool about that, actually, is that on an international flight, you have people from all different countries, so it doesn't feel forced at all," says Daniel Dae Kim (24, Angel), a Korean-born, American-reared actor whose Lost character, Jin, speaks no English.

Kim owes his job in part to Yunjin Kim, the Korean-born actress who plays his wife, whose audition for another role in the show "blew us away," executive producer Damon Lindelof says. "We realized that she spoke fluent Korean and decided that we should have a Korean character on the island. And maybe it was a husband and wife."

For Daniel Dae Kim, it's "an opportunity because I haven't had a chance to speak any Korean in any of the projects I've done. And I've really made it a point to try and take roles that are as assimilated as possible, so this is a real great chance to explore a whole different side of my career."

Fans find all manner of theories about 'Lost'
By Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY
Sometimes it starts at 9:01 p.m. Wednesday. Sometimes it doesn't happen until Thursday morning.

Shedding light: Kate (Evangeline Lilly) and Jack (Matthew Fox) are increasingly ensnared by the island's mysteries on the hit series.
ABC

But each week, at some point after the credits start rolling on ABC's hit drama Lost, fans start in.

On the Internet, on radio shows, in the office or at home with friends and family, they assess and obsess about the latest episode of the mystery about plane crash survivors on a mysterious island.

"My husband and I discuss theories throughout the viewing of the show so much that sometimes I have to shush him so I can hear what is happening," says Michelle Horan, 36, of Atlanta.

"If we had a water cooler, that's where we'd talk about it, but we end up talking about it in the lab," says Karen Schroeder, 35, of Taylor Mill, Ky., who works in a research and development lab for a company that formulates coatings for various products.

Lost averages more than 17 million viewers each week. Speculation already is running high about Episode 9, which airs tonight at 8 ET/PT: Is Iraqi survivor Sayid captured by a Frenchwoman, the source of the bizarre 16-year-old radio transmission?

Also tonight, Tom Cruise's cousin William Mapother plays Ethan, another plane crash survivor — or is he?

Details get viewers buzzing. For example, what was the significance of bad boy Sawyer reading the book Watership Down? And what is the connection between the polar bear in the comic youngster Walt was reading and the polar bear found on the island?

The focus on minutiae is all part of the larger question: What's really going on? Viewers know an airplane left Sydney bound for Los Angeles, got off course and crashed on a tropical island. But where are they, and how can some of the strange things be explained?

Some fans think it's a giant "ant farm" being observed by aliens; others suggest it's a government project; still others figure it must be a Jurassic Park type of scientific compound, although show co-creator Damon Lindelof has said the unseen monster on the island is "not a dinosaur."

So what's going on? Here are some of the most popular theories:

•Purgatory. Jeffrey Field, 34, of Overland Park, Kan., says maybe they're trapped "between heaven and hell — forced to look back on the decisions of their lives. It's a fascinating concept, though now that I've spent so much time contemplating that idea, I almost hope they've got something better up their sleeves."

Land of the L-O-S-T

Besides the theories behind the mysterious island of Lost, there are even theories that LOST might be an acronym. Among suggestions at www.lost-tv.com, where there are more than 4,000 posts under the "Theories and Speculation" forum:

Beverly Bruce, 30, of Phoenix, isn't convinced that it's purgatory, even though that has been one of the earliest and most popular theories. "I'm not sure any show is brave enough to pretend heaven is not utopia, and hell is not relentless torture, and this show depicts neither of the two. There's good and bad, but not sainthood or evilness."

•Time travel/science testing. "As for theories, my favorite is that they flew through a worm hole," says Rob Bingham, 33, of St. Peters, Mo., an admitted Star Trek "geek."

The survivors "have been captured on an island for scientific observation. This would answer a lot of questions: They are not dead; the weird creatures are independent variables introduced by the scientists to test their adaptability and stamina." Survivalist Locke is working for the scientists — "thus the ability to walk (Locke had been in a wheelchair before the crash) and the level of understanding he seems to have."

•A dream planet. "My favorite theory is that the island is a place that creates out of whole cloth the thoughts and dreams of these people. Wish you could walk? You walk. Wish everyone hated you? They do. Want your cold dead father to be alive? Done," says Julian South, 46, of Portland, Ore.

•Terrorists. "These people are not dead," says Jack Groshans, 51, of Pinckney, Mich. Lost is a regular topic of conversation at his weekly Monday Night Football get-together. Best theory: "It's a military research project funded by Euro-terrorists. They are testing genetic changes to animals (hence the polar bear) in hopes of creating ways to make people immune to cold and heat, cutting down on their need for food and water and lightening the amount of stuff they would have to carry in an invasion or coup d' état. Their ultimate goal is control of the OPEC oil fields, and they are hoping to create small forces capable of striking multiple targets at once."

And some are just along for the ride. "I don't have any theory as to what the overall plot is," says Rozan Caculitan, 31, of Ashburn, Va. "But it's a great exploration into human behavior when forced into an unexpected situation."

He enjoys being 'Lost'

By MARISA GUTHRIE
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Dominic Monaghan as 'Lost's' Charlie

Getting stranded on an inhospitable island with a bunch of nefarious characters and a blood-thirsty beast that lurks in the bushes has turned out to be a good thing for Dominic Monaghan.
The British actor acquired cult fame status by playing the hairy-footed Hobbit Merry Brandybuck in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. And now his smoldering portrayal as tortured rocker Charlie on ABC's "Lost" (tonight at 8) has positioned him as one of the hit show's breakout stars.

"It's great to be in a show that people actually watch," Monaghan told the Daily News recently.

"My friends watch it," he continued. "And it's great because they're not tuning in to a piece of sh-- show just to see me. They watch it because they want to watch it."

Monaghan has seen his share of bad TV, most of it in his native England. Although he has the blockbuster "Lord of the Rings" movies to his credit, he had few reservations about committing to an American TV project.

"American television is just a lot more dynamic and creative," said Monaghan. "There seems to be quite a lot invested in American television. They take it really quite seriously over here, which is really refreshing. They give it a lot of weight."

Another selling point was J.J. Abrams, the mastermind behind "Alias," who created "Lost." The new show revolves around a group of people stranded on an island after a plane crash.

"[Abrams] was someone that I was really impressed with," said Monaghan. "He has an innate ability to get you excited about what he's working on."

The cast of "Lost" is sequestered on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, where they endure a grueling production schedule and little advance warning of plot developments lest spoilers end up on the myriad "Lost" fan sites.

"They track all the scripts so if one turns up on eBay, they will know who did it," Monaghan said. "They keep up with what's being said on the Internet and make sure that they confirm or deny rumors that pop up."

But Monaghan has some information about upcoming episodes.

"In future flashbacks, you're going to see Charlie [at] the height of his heroin addiction," he said.

"We're definitely going to see more of the monster," he added, offering another snippet of plot. "At least one of the major characters is going to die by the end of the season. And the monster could be the reason that character gets lost."

On whether or not there is a supernatural element, Monaghan is more cryptic.

"Everyone on the island," he said, "is linked in some way."

I found this on the main website that the creators made

This is a THEORY NOT A SPOILER. Not all the details are here to understand it though. If you read Dominics article it might give some insight

In responce to the current debate surr says: If what she said is true... they were scientists... capable of solar power...

Furthermore this continues to support my there theory... why Jack HooksUp with CrazyFrenchChick, and explains several aspects of the show so far...
Credit goes to Dominic Monaghan for the elephant with the cats courtesy of Jorge Garcia(see VIP archive), in addition this incorporated elements of the bipolar bear and gay dolphin story from ABC board(original poster unknown-but-awesome). So without further adu:

Sixteen years ago Frenchy and a boat load of zoo animals crash landed on the island. Frenchy was a genetisist (bad surr spelling!) and genetically engineered many a zoo animal from the animals who survived the crash. This included the bipolar bear, the gay dolphin and a 20 foot tall invisible elephant. Later, when our Losties landed on the island, she took a bunch of invisible house cats from a failed experiment and taped them to the giant invisible elephant. This was done to ensure that none of the Losties would attempt to enter the jungle and discover her experiments. This did not work however and bipolar bear was shot and killed by "Sawyer." (I really have to re-read the bipolar bear and gay dolphin story.) Furthermore, Locke ran into the invisible giant elephant/house cat combo thingy and has since had an ephiphany (is this one spelled right?) and has now decided to use the rest of the Losties for his own experimentation.

See explains a lot doesn't it lol... this is just great *eg*

whoops error surr had to fix
