New Desktop Tower

I'm in need of a new desktop computer tower. I have a 20" Samsung monitor so I only need the tower. My current HP is about 7 years old and the display driver keeps crashing, even when uninstalling and installing again, it's running slow, and crashes multiple browsers on a consistent basis.

The max I want to spend is $500. I don't play games on it but I do stream sports. Other than that, I don't use it much for anything but browsing the net.

I'm not a tech guy so any help would be appreciated in pointing me to something that will perform well without breaking the bank.

Precisely. Integrated graphics would work just fine.

Its easy to build, but if he doesnt want too, I bet he has a local friend who will help him out.

Spend a little more and getting a lot more is just better value, especially when he has already set aside 500 for budget.
There's no value for him at all if he doesn't want to, or can't, do it.

Building a PC is pretty easy, but I don't recommend it for you. You don't save that much money, if any. You don't get the same degree of tech support and warantee coverage. And you have a greater chance of running into what may be a simple problem to someone motivated to build their own but that you don't want to hassle with figuring out how to fix. Don't let these guys push you into a DIY if you'd be happier just buying one.

If building one sounds intriguing to you, then by all means give it a try because it's not hard and you'd get a lot of help from the guys here at CP. But it's not as simple as buying an off the shelf, fully functioning, tech support included, power-up-and-start-computing box from a reputable vendor.

Well, that $500, I don't know if that includes Windows or not.. so I'm going without it on this build, coming in at $533.70 total. This is a rig you could game on if you wanted and is capable enough to stream video fairly well. If this doesn't work, I can start skimping on components for you like a $20 case, cheaper PSU (ugh), 4GB instead of 8GB RAM or something...

Sorry, didn't read you're not tech savvy, but building a computer is pretty easy ... umm hmm I haven't looked at anything but components in 15 years so I'm not much help if you wanna buy an off the shelf comp. About all you'll find, I fear, is a cheap ass E-Machines at Wally WOrld or something like that, but who knows? Not that I don't look at off the shelf prices, but I can build better for the same money.

I disagree on the money part. You can build a computer with better components, that is upgradeable, and better performing than most pre-built computers at the same price point.

NOt sure what you think of this one...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883265829

or this, since you stream and won't likely get a great graphics card in a pre-built under 500, the AMD A series have integrated Radeon Graphics chip that is far better than Intel's integrated graphics.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I don't think upgradeability matters much in this case (since he's not interested in getting tech savvy) and I don't think the money you can save is significant enough to be worth it if you aren't getting some degree of satisfaction out of building your own. I do agree that it's nice to be able to pick quality parts, but again, I'm not sure it makes very much difference. I'm all for building your own, and I've done it several times, but some people don't want to do it and that's OK.

My advice would be to watch for bargains on sites like techbargains.com and when he sees something in his price range that meets the system requirements for the things he wants to do, google for reviews, and if they're satisfactory, just buy it and be done with it.

I bought three 17" Acer laptops last year for $399 each. The girls play games on them and all kinds of stuff. They work just fine.

I doubt they are playing Skyrim, Counter-Strike Source, Battlefield 4, etc. That's where "gaming" and "playing games" are separated by a drastic measure.

This is true.

But if he does not want to build.

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/

or

microcenter, either have them build or check out their clearance section.

None of those require anything more than a mid-ranged PC. BF4 maybe pushing it but the rest meh.

Did you actually read the OP?

The guy said he doesn't play games at all.

Their laptops run Minecraft and Disney Infinity, which are both far more taxing than ANYTHING he will run.
