JEFFREY FLANAGAN OVERHEARD AT ARROWHEAD
OVERHEARD AT ARROWHEAD
GEATHERS SAYS PUSH TURNED INTO A BLOW

Robert Geathers wasn’t head-hunting. He wants everyone to know that.

Geathers, the Bengals’ defensive end who delivered the knockout blow to Trent Green in the third quarter, said he was pushed into Green by a Chiefs player.

(Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said it was Eddie Kennison.)

“I didn’t even think I hit him that hard,” Geathers said. “It certainly wasn’t helmet to helmet. I know I felt I got pushed from behind and I hit him with my shoulder.

“Then I ran off the field. It wasn’t until a little later we saw he was hurt. Then you just start praying and hope you see some movement from him.”

Geathers wasn’t penalized, although Green, who had been scrambling, clearly was into his slide.

“I really couldn’t tell he was sliding,” Geathers said.

Geathers said he planned to call Green on Sunday night or today to find out more about his condition.

“You feel bad because you don’t want to see people get hurt,” Geathers said. “He has a family.”

Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer said he also was concerned.

“It’s a small fraternity, being NFL quarterbacks,” Palmer said. “You feel terrible.

“When I was hurt, Trent gave me some good advice, so you just hope he’ll be OK.”

Palmer’s return

Palmer continued to insist his return from major knee surgery was a nonissue, and for the most part, he played the way he did before the surgery.

He completed 13 of 19 passes for 127 yards. But he wasn’t exactly pleased with his performance.

“It was kind of ugly at times,” Palmer said.

Palmer and wide receiver Chad Johnson clearly were out of sync early on, and Palmer was spotted shouting at Johnson in the first half.

Asked about the exchange, Johnson said, “We’re fine.”

Palmer explained the confrontations: “He’s the type of player that when he makes a mistake, he wants to know about it and redeem himself. I’m the type of player that when I make a mistake, I want to redeem myself, too.”

White uniforms?

The Chiefs used their white-on-white uniforms for the first time since Dec. 26, 1999, at Seattle. That was Gunther Cunningham’s last road game as the Chiefs’ head coach.

The Chiefs’ media-relations department and owner Lamar Hunt couldn’t recall whether the Chiefs had ever worn their white-on-whites at home, though there was some talk that it may have happened in the late 1970s.

The Chiefs wore the white-on-whites in anticipation of a hot and muggy day, the same reasoning Jacksonville used for wearing its road uniforms at home Sunday.

Bad openers

What did Sunday’s home opener have in common with last year’s home opener?

Herm Edwards was on the losing end of both, and his teams managed just one touchdown in each game. Edwards and the Jets lost 27-7 last year here.

Quinn sweepstakes

Overhead from a fan leaving the stadium: “We’re just setting ourselves up to get Brady Quinn.”

Quinn, Notre Dame’s star quarterback, might be the No. 1 pick next year.

No respect

Not that many Bengals were very impressed with their performance on Sunday, despite the convincing win.

“We made a lot of mistakes out there,” defensive tackle John Thornton said. “Good teams will see that and hurt you.”

Apparently that doesn’t include the Chiefs.

Welcome to the domino effect that will terminate the Chiefs this season.

No Roaf or TRich means no protection for Green and that means RIP Trent Green

No Green means no passing game

No passing game means Larry Johnson having the biggest X mark on his back known to mankind.

A huge marked X on his back means no running game as teams will load the box and stop our running game meaning 3 and out repeatedly for us.

Going 3 and out all the time puts pressure on our already swiss cheese defense. (However they did show promise today). This leads to another long season for our defense.

Putting pressure on our defense to keep us in games results in a final record of 6 games, and thats being nice.

I had us going 5 and 11 before yesterday. I'd prefer a 2 or 3 win season though so we would have a chance at Quinn. By the time we got a new coach 3 or 4 years from now Quinn would be ready to rock.

If you truly want to lose to get quinn, then I want Croyle out there to find out if we would even need quinn. I would rather rebuild the No line with first day picks then pay a bundle for a QB if we already have one.

I just posted the same thing in the "start Croyle thread" I would like to start him now and see what we've got. Then we will know if we need to draft Quinn or not, I suspect we need to draft Quinn, but am willing to give Croyle a chance.

Don't get me wront though. I don't mean throw in the towel though. If Trent's injury is more serious than what we have been told, this is what I want to do. If he is not seriously injured then line up our best chance to win. Give Huard 2 starts, if he sucks it up, start Croyle then.

I don't want to lose. But I would like to rebuild this team as a whole not just one side of the ball at a time. Keep building the D but start thinking about the future of the offense too. If we completly started to rebuild by the time we got rid of Herm and Peterson for that matter we might have the makings of a good team.

I'd take Calvin Johnson over Brady Quinn, if we're drafting that high. We can find a FA QB, trade for a young one, or perhaps Croyle could develop.

You guys are pathetic. Talking about the first pick of the draft, rebuilding after "getting rid" of Herm after only 1 game.

Interesting..... he wasn't trying to hit Green and couldn't tell he was sliding. That means he either wasn't doing his job or is lying. I mean, he's supposed to stop the ball-carrying QB unless Green is sliding, right? So if he "couldn't tell if he was sliding," it seems he should be trying to hit him. But instead he just got "pushed into him."

We won't get the first pick. If Green misses more than one week, we will most likely be picking 18-20th - just short of the playoffs.
