Avengers 2

Joss Whedon Talks Quicksilver, the Scarlet Witch and Iron Man's Roles in Avengers 2

Joss Whedon is certainly keeping busy with Marvel. Having written and directed the mega-blockbuster, The Avengers, he is now launching Marvel’s first live-action TV show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., while also preparing Marvel's The Avengers 2.

I spoke to Whedon this week at ABC’s Upfront, where S.H.I.E.L.D. was being announced and asked him a couple of questions about Avengers 2 and some of the characters in it.

Whedon had previously alluded to a brother/sister duo being in the film, which EW later said was indeed Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. When I brought up Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch to Whedon, he confirmed they were the characters in question, explaining, “You know, they had a rough beginning. They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.”

We also know Tony Stark/Iron Man plays another large role in the sequel, but the end of Iron Man 3 saw Tony destroying all the Iron Man suits we knew about, while seemingly stepping back from his time in the armor.

When I asked Whedon if that made it a challenge putting Iron Man in Avengers 2, he remarked, “Well, I feel like in Iron Man 3, even though he said, ‘I’ve changed' -- he blew up his remote suits, but I don’t think anybody thinks he doesn’t have one anymore. The question is, if The Avengers are called, does he show up? And the answer is, ‘Yes!’”

The Avengers featured clunky dialog, dopey angular shots that meant nothing to the scene, a very bad fake death of agent Coulson and more. It took me more than four viewings to get through the entire movie. I watched it again completely and was aghast at the poor quality.

Outside of Downey, jr. and Mark Ruffalo, who was completely underused, the acting were as wooden as the dialog. Colby Smulders was a robot.

It's a bad film.

The dialog was fine and other than MINOR MINOR bits the quality overall was fantastic... I will however agree with you that Colby flat out sucks as an actress.

Avengers wasn't even close to being a bad film. Man of Steel on the other hand was just straight up awful. That turd gave R.I.P.D. a run for its money as worst film of 2013.

I like Supes, thought Avengers was meh, and agree that MoS was utter shit . The rumors about Doomsday in JL or BvS make me cringe because that character is just another shitty excuse for Snyder to have another brainless 30 minute punchfest in the streets of Metropolis again.

I never said I didn't like avengers. Just that I liked man of steel more. And that that was an unpopular opinion to have, as you have so aptly demonstrated.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I thought it was an utter hack job and pales in comparison to Iron Man 3 and The Winter Soldier.

Man of Steel
certainly had its issues. From changing the "S" symbol's meaning to darkly shot cinematography and a bummed out, dour Superman, it tried too hard to emulate Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy and ultimately failed in comparison.

But that said, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Chris Meloni, Laurence Fishburne, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Henry Cavill were believable and convincing. They weren't cartoonish or cartoon-like characters. Michael Shannon was slightly over the top in certain scenes but that was to be expected of his character.

The biggest issues I have with MOS are the look and the edit but I still enjoyed it more than The Avengers.

Man of Steel was 100% better than Avengers.

Avengers was tons better.

AVENGERS had clunky dialogue? This is a complaint coming from Man Of Steel fans?

I liked MOS a ton, but every single word that came out of the lady Kryptonian was the hokiest shit I could have written in the 8th grade.

Edit: The opening scenes with Jor El and the Kryptonian council were piss-oriffic.

Edit edit: When Zod lost his shit and went toe-to-toe with Superman at the climax -- virtually every word he said was stilted, bland Bad Guy Banter.

I'm not a fan of either film but The Avengers is just downright bad. The only beleiveable performances were by RDJ and Ruffalo.

The rest were awful.

I loved Avengers at first but after each additional viewing with my kids I realized I was really wrong. It doesn't hold up to multiple viewings and it is really hacked together to get as much shit in as possible. MoS was a slow mover that took time to find its way but as a whole was a MUCH better story and more entertaining. For lack of a better term, it was much more realistic to how I would see a real Superman being. Was the fight WAAAAY too long? Yeah, but I can forgive that with the story being well told.

Zod's final **** you to Jor El was pretty awesome, though.

Something about extracting the Kryptonian DNA from Kal El 'S corpse and building a new civilization atop his bones.
