*.* 2013 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2013! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

**From the 2012 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

Today I did:

Squat - 3x5 - 145/155/165 (each set added 10)
SLDL - 3x5 - 145 (I backed down to 115 after I first posted the above message to get my form down)
Leg Press - 3x15 - 115 PWO (not sure if I messed up the number above or not, I might have given myself an extra 45 lbs on accident up there)
Leg Curl - 3x15 - 60 lbs
Calf Raise - 3 x 12 - 70 PWO

So in 3 weeks is that decent progress? Should I add more next week. I feel like I could have probably easily done 155/165/175 on squats today.
Give it another month of just getting your feet wet on these lifts and getting your form down. Any chance of videos on squats and deads?

Then we are moving to a simplified 5/3/1 format to build your strength on the main lifts and fill in rest with accessory work.

For some reason my roommate can't get a good grip on the squat bar. He said his arms can't bend back that far. I really don't know wtf he is talking about, so I had him do front squats, which he couldn't figure out either, but is there any kind of way to stretch out your lats or whatever muscle it is that would constrict your arms from being able to reach to where the squat bar would be?

I think this whole thing sounds preposterous, but I just witnessed it.

Either he has t-rex arms or he has the bar too far down his back. Shrug your shoulders and it will make a ledge where the bar should rest.

Yeah. He did shoulder work with me on Saturday for the first time so maybe he was just sore....

Also he couldn't squat the bar and could barely front squat the bar. I really need to figure out how to help him. Maybe I should have him read my copy of SS?

Went to lift with my buddy today at 24 Hour Fitness. That gym is way bigger and has more equipment (but strangely is missing the Pec Dec machine).

Anyways dude is like 5'10", 210 lbs of pure muscle. He told me he just quit roiding a few weeks ago though. He gave me some tips on stuff, but I also noticed he didn't seem to be using proper form on any lift, and he was using his legs to help him lift giant amounts of weight for these shoulder workouts.

OK, So I've been weighing myself at night to track progress. That's all fine and well, but I weighed myself one morning and it was SEVEN pounds lighter than it was the previous night. I weighed myself right before bed and right when I got up and I didn't piss, shit, or sweat during the night.

WTF?

Your muscles tense up during the day and get heavier.

You weigh the least you will all day when you wake up, especially if you take a hot steamy shower right after you wake up.

That's about the high end of what I saw sometimes when I was weighing myself daily.

Sounds really good. I am debating what to eat tonight. I have no food at home. I'm gonna probably get something that isn't considered healthy. As of right now Carls Jr is my leading candidate.

Duuuuuuuuuuuude. I had a heart attack thinking about you eating Carls Jr.

If you're going to eat bad, at least eat something defendable. Find a Chipotle.
