Chiefs' Player Jevon Belcher involved in murder-suicide, shoots self at Arrowhead

edit: Sources say the player is Jovan Belcher. Police have yet to confirm.

An unnamed Kansas City Chiefs player has committed suicide at the team facility and authorities are on the scene, the police confirmed to ESPN on Saturday morning.

Local reports say police are operating with the belief the player fatally shot his girlfriend at a house before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and killing himself at around 8 a.m local time. The Associated Press reported the player's age to be 25.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

There were no other injuries at the team facility, police said.

The Chiefs (1-10) were preparing to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

The NFL has told the Panthers to travel as planned to Kansas City on Saturday, the Charlotte Observer has reported, citing interim general manager Brandon Beane.

Good point on the violence against women, considering that he could have been a jealous boyfriend for all I know.

This is why I reserved my judgement until all the facts came in anyways. I'm sure the autospy will be performed, since it's a crime scene?

One night Javon got angry over a girl, and punched a window, the shards of glass cut his wrist, and completely severed his right thumb. When we pulled up on scene he was sitting on the sidewalk, a huge pool of blood around him. He passed out from loss of blood on the way to the ER.

We got him to the hospital in time to save the thumb, and I was always impressed to see him in the NFL. I would think "Hey, I had a part in this guy being alive, and part of the reason he's still able to catch a football!"

Even if he had head issues that doesn't mean it was the reason. I am one that values the impact of depression, having a very MINOR issue when I was young, but it's not always the reason for things or an excuse. It really depends on the situation. That's why not knowing the facts leads to major assumptions. To me, depression or not, involving another person's life is something higher than that. That seems, more likely than not, an act of anger, selfishness, and lack of self-control.

I know depression has footholds in those issues but I think overall it's two different things. For that reason understanding something resulting in suicide and something resulting in murder are two different things to me. Still, I would like to have all the facts.

FOX has the rights...so playing it Monday night would have directly conflicted MNF on ESPN...

Yeah ... I was aware of the financial problems and probably should have mentioned that, as well.

I rarely mention this kind of thing, but I actually know people who knew him and, according to them, they never considered him to be succumbing to the pressure and certainly never saw him as potentially suicidal. Outwardly, he appeared perfectly functional.

However, the article you posted supports my point of view, in a way. It mentions the large number of people who were depending on Seau. He left them in the lurch. I'm willing to blame "head trauma" to an extent. But I don't know if head trauma prevents a person from considering what their suicide will do to those he leaves behind. I remain pretty troubled by the entire episode, to be honest.

It's not like the NFL hasn't rescheduled games to be played on Monday, though.

Granted it was a bit different, but they moved the Giants-Vikings game to Monday due to the Metrodome's roof collapsing.

Dane, it seems like you're under the impression that head trauma manifests itself in some true crazed state. That's not true. There are a million variables in each case and each case can be different. Head trauma can cause any condition like bipolar disorder, manic depression, OCD, etc to progress dramatically. It can cause early onset dementia/Alzheimer's and a million other things. Who knows WTF happened, but you certainly can't rule out head trauma because Javon didn't go on a rampage.
