Game of Thrones (spoiler-free zone)

A few have suggested it, might as well test the waters. The idea is to give people who haven't read the books a safe place to talk about the show.

A few quick ground rules:
  • No Spoilers!!!!! for upcoming episodes.
  • Larger Song of Ice and Fire discussion should be limited to the other thread although I think a tiny bit of book delving to fill in holes should be okay (example of this would be talking about Catelyn and her treatment of the wolves in the novel, which was alluded to on TV but never really made clear...)
  • Everything that happened that week is fair game once an episode airs. So if you don't watch on Sunday night, I'd stay outta here until you do...

Yeah, he's been catching up. He posted about the Red Wedding a few days ago.

I don't imagine he's poking his nose back in here to spoil it for himself.

That surprised me. Guy's a complete douche, but a guy you'd want on your side in a fight. (Unlike that worm, Slynt.)

Affirmative.

He's an ass but I can relate. He's hard because he has to be. You don't get misfits to fight being soft. I understand the reason he is the way he is. And if ****ers need to die. I'm recruiting him.

And that Olly kid. That shot was ON THE MONEY.

Yeah, it seems most of the officers come from the North where the Watch is somewhat still respected. All the others are pretty much the dregs of society who choose the wall instead of being executed or imprisoned.

They did a great job with both Sam and Jon. Sam's come a long way, and that was really the first time you saw Jon acting like he really was Mormont's protege.

Slynt hiding in the cellar was hilarious.

Yeah, I'm all caught up now.

It's just bullshit when they kill off such likable characters, especially when they have such pure motives. Where's the justice? The retribution? What should happen rarely ever does in this show.

Robb Stark was my number 1 but I can understand why they'd ice him. The Red Wedding was one of the craziest TV moments I can remember seeing. I will remember it forever and years from now when this show is just a distant memory, I'll likely still be able to envision what happened then.

Killing off Oberyn, though? He was colorful and interesting. I feel they lost a lot more than they could gain by getting rid of him but I guess I'll reserve final judgement until I see what comes of Tyrion's sentence..

GRRM would tell you that he's trying to write a story that is more realistic than all of the other stories out there where the hero conquers all. Kings were rarely the most noble people out there - they got where they were by destroying their enemies - often brutally. (Of course, the fact that there are dragons and white walkers obviously takes away from the realism a bit, but it is what it is.)

As one example, here's an article about the Red Wedding:

Yeah, that's the nature of the show. I divested myself from the characters after the red wedding and just plan on the cool people dying. I'm fulky prepared for Tyrian's awful death.
