If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

Sac has made some great posts the last couple of weeks as why there should/could be reason for optimism this coming season.

While the team may not be perfect at every position, it is clear the new regime is making legit moves to make this a very competitive team as quickly as possible.
Likely won't be an issue for Alex. Through it all, Alex had a lot of respect and faith from the main players on the team. (Justin Smith, Willis, Gore, Staley, Vernon Davis, etc.)

(not at all to say you are suggesting otherwise)

They can buy into Smith all they want. It won't lead to wins.

Also, you really didn't refute anything I said.

Its pretty obvious we have one of the best QBs in the game, along with one of the best OL in the game and maybe the best RB in the game. Our offense should be dominant.

What was there to refute? You didn't make any statements of fact. You just expressed your opinions. Personally, I think your opinions are pretty unrealistic, but opinions aren't the kind of things that can be proven wrong.

Sort of. You point to the defense as being the weak link last season. I think the offense that posted 4 points a game in the first half was a far bigger problem. They played great the year before with Orton... when Orton kept them on the sideline. And Orton kept that on the sideline without Charles and Moeaki.

I'm pretty sure I said nothing about the defense being the weak link last season. I talked about why they wouldn't be particularly good this coming year, but I think it's clear that the Chiefs' O scares no one, before or after trading for Smith.

Seems pretty simple, stop the run and force Smith to beat you. If you're lucky, you won't even have to do that, because Reid will do it for you.

Pretty interesting to look back at Andy Reid's work showing why he is so good with QB's.

Before going to Philly, Mike Vick was an inaccurate running QB who never threw 3,000 yards. He also never averaged 30 passes a game in his career.

Once he got coached by Reid, he looked drastically better. His first year starting in 2010 was incredible for his standards. He completed over 60% of his passes, only threw 6 INT's and had a 100 QBR.

Then in 2011 he kept his completion % to 60%, threw even more yards and exceled to a better passing QB than he ever was in Atlanta.

Then last year, even with the OL trouble, he threw a lot more yards. He was on pace to have almost 3,800 passing yards. Yes that's right. You read that right.
All of this was with Vick throwing 30 or more passes on average.

Now to look at Alex Smith. The last 2 years, Alex Smith was 9-3 when he threw the ball 30 times a game with 14 TD's to 7 INT's (3 INT's were in one game).

Last year Alex Smith was on pace to throw 24 TD's and have around 3,300 passing yards in Harbaugh's conservative offense.

According to the stats, it's not out of the question that Alex Smith has a good year. I think it's definitely possible for him to throw 25 TD's and 3,400 yards in this more aggressive offense.

The OL looks impressive, but Bowe and Charles are the only talented skill players on offense. Offensively, the Chiefs will not be much better than last season.

I'd guess 6 wins.
If we play Martyball we can win 10+ plus games, if Reid plays Andy Reid football and makes Alex Smith throw - 6 wins at best.

I'll accept that arguement and always have from the beginning. Vick became something he had never been before with the Eagles so the only hope is for Alex to also become something he has never been in his career. I'm not sold on Reid's ability to evaluate QB talent, but I think he can make a QB better.

I don't think it happens, but it's the only possible way to justfy the move.
