2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

it's probably on here already, so sorry in advance.

heard robert ford on 610 today. said that in all likely hood, the royals brass want to keep myers in the minors this year.--obviously these guys are geniuses.
i've said before that it's just about a positive fact that frenchy won't be moved because of that goddamned frencyquarter thursday promotion. gotta get every penny we can. don't want to lose a dollar on an obvious money maker.

sometimes i just want to punch puppies.

Well some teams are showing interest in Frenchy. Even Dayton has to understand that trading him for something, even a bag of balls, is better than nothing.

Hell, getting his contract off their books is worth a third of a great pitcher.

Pretty sure the Royals will have to eat most of it. He needs to be traded for nothing...Myers needs to be up to get some AB's

The similarities between Moore and his old colleague and buddy Chuck LaMar are pretty glaring, aren't they?

Moore walked into a tough situation, no doubt. But he's spent most of that credit.

Ultimately, I think Moore's last chance might be next season. If the Royals turn in another losing season that year, it will be really hard to just "stand pat" and keep fans coming to the ballpark even at current levels.

If Dayton is able to acquire two additional starting pitchers - legitimate guys, not lottery ticket guys - I think they have a good shot to be a winning team next year. Heck, if I were him, I'd pursue two quality guys and STILL sign a lottery ticket. I was all for protecting the core group of players as it came up through the minors to the MLB level. But now that they're all here... it's time to move whatever pieces necessary out of wave 2 (and wave 1 pieces that are lagging) to improve the team.

That's the way small markets have to do it to consistently win. First group serves as the core. Second group is used to fill in holes through trade. Third group replaces lost core guys. Fourth group is used to fill in holes through trade. etc.

But if the Royals don't win next year and IF Moore is canned... Can the Royals find their own Friedman, though? The job is much more attractive than it would have been when Moore was hired, so that's a positive...

This is where I am at now too. Outside of Myers, give up whatever we need to in the minors to get pitching. Once Myers is here we shouldn't really need any positional players for a while anyways. So Colon, Gio, Starling, Cuthbert, etc., trade them away for starting pitching. Then if we sign all our ML guys again we won't need more than a few positional role players here and there for 10 years.

Yep. Nail on head. Dayton has built a nice farm system with nice prospects but thats it. All that matters ultimately is WINS at the MLB level.

Hes most certainly gone next year if its bad again and maybe even the middle of the year depending on how good or bad the start is.

Personally, i dont think he does it. From that column, History is certainly not on his side.

Thing is, he generally says the right things. I heard him a day or two ago talking about using prospects to trade for pitching. I think he fundamentally gets it. Now, whether he can actually execute.....that's a different story.

Some of the success we hope for is going to be getting a bit lucky too. Pitt trades for a guy like James McDonald, who the Dodgers had given up on. He pitches ok for a bit, then blossoms into a front of the rotation guy. We need to be a bit lucky, and unfortunately we seem to fall on the unlucky side of the fence 90% of the time. We needed a guy like Paulino to really turn into a #2/#3 200+ inning horse. Instead, the exact opposite happens and he blows out his arm.

Not only that, but he's going to start at catcher in AA on Friday. Anybody want to road trip to see this up and coming prospect?

Good defensive catcher with lots of experience. Can't really hurt the pitching development. Plus we have Salvy so who cares about developing a catcher
