*.* 2013 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2013! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

**From the 2012 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

You seem to be focusing a lot on what you're eating. Watch the portions.

Here's another tip that NOBODY mentions... Figure out something to snack on when you get cravings. It's going to happen, so have a plan. Get some popcorn seeds and brown paper bags and microwave yourself some oil-free popcorn...get some pudding mix and skim milk...get some gum...get sugar free lemonade mix...go to Costco and buy some cashews...whatever floats your boat. The important thing is that you plan for the times you get weak, because those times will come.

here is my next question - What is a good FIRST workout - I really feel lost in regard to routine. Shall I mow down that Russian Pull-up cycle? Anyone?

As you should watch what you eat. It is about calories, not portions. A handful of trailmix can net 300 calories...the same as an entire chicken breast that tops a salad with mushroom, olives, peppers and vinaigrette dressing. One provides about 8g protein and the other about 40 grams of protein. One keeps you full for hours and one will not based sheerly on volume of food you must digest. It IS about what you eat, not portion sizes if you really want to get serious about nutrition.

Right, but he's talked about losing weight, not nutrition. Losing weight is about calorie intake. You can eat anything and lose/gain weight depending on how much you eat.

I think most Americans struggle with both portion size and what it is we're eating..

I mentioned my fat friend that always asks me for exercise/diet/nutrition advice earlier in this thread, but the first thing I told him was that he needs to watch his portion sizes. We all know the stuff we put in our mouths is usually shit, but what most people don't realize is that, on top of eating like shit, most of us overeat to the max. You really don't ever need to be stuffed and if you feel bloated and heavy after a meal, you should likely cut your portion sizes down.

go swimming. It's the best possible workout because it works out most of your body simultaneously.

Oh and did I mention it's fun?

You'll see far more benefit with weight training.
