For the third time in my career we were informed on Friday that a stellar male engineer has decided to live his life as a woman. I've worked with him on several projects and I didn't see this coming. He has a BS and MS from MIT. Smart guy, now girl.

My company (9000+ employees) handled this really well. The issue went to the top of corporate HR and when all was said and done everything went smoothly. It was "site specific" and we were asked to attend a meeting. Managers explained that the newly-named "Ally" was starting treatments to become a woman.

I'm old, it's 2014, and Ally is a smart girl. Good for her!

First of all this isn't an issue of being sick or perverted, this issue of self-identifying as a different gender really is a thing that can happen, that can't be effectively treated or reversed, and can't be counseled or prayed away. Also, I'm pretty sure you have to go through years of therapy first until mental health professionals are willing to sign off on it and say this really is something you should do.

But beyond all that, why do you care? If it happened at my job, I wouldn't go out of my way to support it, but I sure as hell wouldn't condemn it or call it perversion. Someone has a mental health problem and this is how they must treat it? Fine whatever, I don't give a damn, let me know what to call HimHer, and I'll move on with my life. It would be a bit more awkward if it was family, but if we'd just be professional colleagues, then I don't have to live with them.

It's the whole look at me, look how tolerant I am thing. The need to feel like you are a part of something around here is really strong. So is the PC estrogen wash which is why the hypocritical nature of the use of hormones I posted earlier has still yet to be addressed even though I have posted it several times in similar threads.

Rather than be outright hostile, you could just simply not care. Thats not PC. The alternative isn't to hold hands singing songs of tolerance and support it, you could...just...not....care.

We don't mock people who have to undergo treatment for cancer or other physical ailments, but when its a mental issue some people get weird about it.

I don't care, I simply am pointing out the hypocritical nature of this place. He'll if I had it my way 70% of all laws would be tossed. I could give a rats ass what an adult chooses to do as long as it doesn't hurt somebody else.
