I'm a Newman fan so obviously I'm happy he's in the Chase and do feel like he deserved that spot by driving to the front, but it's too bad it had to go down like this.

Gaining a point, or letting your teammate lead a lap?

That's one thing. Purposely spinning out, and then TRYING TO GET IT TO HAPPEN AGAIN just a few laps later?

That's blatant bullshit......

http://racing.ap.org/article/did-pen...t-logano-chase
.

Penske Racing may have cut a deal with Front Row Motorsports in the closing laps at Richmond for track position to help get Joey Logano in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

In radio communications reviewed Wednesday by The Associated Press for Front Row driver David Gilliland, his spotter informs the team of a request to let Logano pass him in the final laps of Saturday night's race.

Logano was trying to claim a spot in the 12-driver Chase field. Both Penske and Front Row are Ford teams and thus considered partners.

A voice on the radio, believed to be crew chief Frank Kerr, asks who the request is coming from. The spotter replies: "We've got the big dog and all his cronies."

Kerr then says: "Travis knows what I've been asking for," an apparent reference to Penske Racing competition director Travis Geisler.

Logano passed Gilliland on a restart and finished 22nd, one spot ahead of Gilliland and good enough for a berth in the Chase field.

"Good job, good job, man," the spotter says after the race. "Hopefully we'll get something out of that."

Statistics analyzed by AP also show Gilliland's lap times dropped off by almost 1 second from the times he was running prior to the radio communication.

NASCAR has already punished Michael Waltrip Racing for manipulating the end of Saturday night's race at Richmond.

Ryan Newman was on his way to a victory that would have given him the final spot in the Chase championship field. But Clint Bowyer spun to bring out a caution, setting in motion a chain of events that cost Newman the win and the Chase berth, cost Jeff Gordon a Chase berth and put Martin Truex Jr. and Logano in the final two spots.

NASCAR, concluding that MWR had manipulated the outcome of the race, put Newman in the Chase and bumped Truex. It also fined MWR $300,000 and suspended general manager Ty Norris indefinitely, Bowyer, Truex and Brian Vickers were docked 50 points each, and their crew chiefs were placed on probation through the end of the year.

Bowyer has denied the spin was deliberate. NASCAR could only prove one action — radio communication between Norris and Vickers in which a confused Vickers was told to pit as the field went green with three laps to go. The call was an effort to give Logano position on the track to pass Gordon in the standings and knock Gordon out of the Chase so that Truex could gain a Chase wild-card berth.

Now there may be more for NASCAR to look at ahead of Sunday's race at Chicagoland — the first Chase race.

There's a big difference in letting somebody pass you during the green flag and spinning out on purpose and almost causing a wreck to bring out a caution so somebody doesn't win.

However it goes down, if a driver tanks it to benefit another and there's proof of an arrangement, that is so wrong IMO. And I bet Jeff Gordon still gets in over Logano.

Seemed like the crew chief felt like being cute. Stupid to not know that everyone would hear it and put it together quickly.

I think there is a difference, but if you are NASCAR, if you have proof of the foul, you have to punish it. What is acceptable to drivers under the "code" is one thing, but if you are the governing body and you have proof, you have to act.

I'm a Gordon fan and I'm not sure I want this because it'll seem like it was to get him in when it obviously isn't. That being said, this is all bullshit and further proof that NASCAR has totally ****ed things up by promoting "teams" (or at least not banning them), and is getting closer and closer to being the WWE.

And even if they hand out another fine, it just means the drivers will go to code, hand signals, winks, or whatever else needs to happen to serve what the teams see as the higher cause.

**** it, ban teams... I'm pretty ****ing busy and don't catch a lot of races, all this just makes me less concerned to bother watching any of them.

Come on.

Teams have bought places in races. Meaning, if a car qualifies and another doesn't, people have paid the qualifying team for their spot in the race.

Teammates during the season, have let their teammates pass them to lead laps to get "bonus" points all the time.

If Penske paid Front Row or made a deal to help with equipment in the future, seeing as they are both Ford, then who cares.

This is so different than spinning out on purpose, and then encouraging it again.

Not disagreeing, I just think each racer should want to beat the other 42 equally. I'm not lost on the concept, or how it help in some ways, but I want hard racing every lap. Teams or no teams, at the super speedways they'll create beneficial alliances for drafting. That's enough brotherly love IMO. After that, race the shit out of the first guy in front of you and drive scared if the guy behind you can touch you.

THAT'S why I want point to be awarded for each lap, the sum of the point being just short of what can be earned for the win. That way you have drivers racing to lead each lap instead of "keeping the fenders on and staying out of trouble until the last 10-15 laps." I don't like that at all.

Other than wearing out hardware, burning fuel, setting up other strategies (that can be foiled on a dime), and giving folks in the crowd time to take long craps, the middle 75% of laps mean little. Not nothing, but little..

From ESPN:
http://espn.go.com/racing/nascar/cup...13th-car-chase

JOLIET, Ill. -- Jeff Gordon has been added to the Chase for the Sprint Cup field by NASCAR chairman Brian France as a result of the "unfair" tactics by other teams that knocked him out late in the regular season finale at Richmond.

The Chase, usually consisting of 12 drivers, will now consist of 13 eligible to win the championship.

"There were too many things that altered the event and gave an unfair disadvantage to Jeff and his team, who would have qualified," France said Friday at Chicagoland Speedway, the site of first race of the Chase.

"I have the authority to do that. We will do that."

Gordon was in place to grab the 10th spot in the standings and advance to the Chase before a spin by Clint Bowyer with seven laps left caused a caution that also took Ryan Newman out of position to win and qualify for the postseason.

Newman was added to the Chase on Monday in place of Bowyer's teammate Martin Truex Jr. because of the spinout.

NASCAR also put Front Row Motorsports and Penske Racing on probation Friday after radio chatter appeared the teams colluded to allow Penske's Joey Logano past Front Row's David Gilliland to earn points that made him the 10th-place driver in points.

I agree with Gordon being in if Newman is in. But I wouldn't have added another spot, I'd have kicked Bowyer to the curb. Either way, I'm sure Bowyer's going to pay his price soon enough.

As a Gordon fan, Ive got mixed emotions about it. It was certainly disappointing leaving the race Saturday night having missed by 1pt. Do I feel he got screwed on the deal, yes. But he never should have been in that situation to begin with. 5 DNF's on the year will do that...

I guess I'm glad they made it right. I dont think given his lack of real competitiveness over the last couple of years, I dont see him winning the chase, he is #13 on Friday the 13th...that cant be the best of omens.
