HBO Series "Vinyl"
Did you see the first episode? My take was its like "Boardwalk Empire" meets "Boogie Nights" with a little James Brown biopic thrown in. HBO seems to have to include rampant drug abuse and nothing left to the imagination sex in every series they put together. I thought the characters played by Ray Romano and Dice Clay were interesting, because they were both outside of their normal characters. Mick Jagger's son plays a role as a Punk Band leader. It's fiction with a slight toe-hold in historical reality of the NY music scene in the mid 1970s, but its hard to like any of the characters or buy the plot.

Inspired idea having the mail room guys as catalysts for disco's beginnings. Vinyl has been a pretty good series based on vivid characters and the music of course. Knowing Jagger is behind the scenes with input into period details makes it compelling also.

Rolling Stone pretty much panned the whole thing. I know a lot about music from that era, because that was my youth soundtrack. Lots of tits, just about every woman in the show gets naked, boned, gives a hummer etc. Could have done without seeing Ray Romano's hairy ass (can not unsee -yikes) Thought this was basically Boardwalk Empire set in NYC in the 1970s, and it's music instead of boot legging. It was OK, not great.

I accidentally stumbled onto the very beginning of HBO airing the entire first season. I started watching and was almost immediately engaged. set a timer...and binge watched season 1 the last few days.
I'm somewhat of a music freak. it's my thing. it the question has to do with singers or songs or bands....I usually know the answer. I really like this show! sadly season 2 is far off....february I think. loved a lot of what went on. having alice cooper, robert plant, elvis, lennon and bowie show up. Dice playing Buck Rogers. when they crash mama cass's party...all the people they ran into...just awesome! stills, nash, young, cass....apparently jackson browne was there too according to the credits... I'm digging it. now I'm gonna go do a line!

oh...meant to say....the guy playing chubby elvis was damn good!
and....that theme song they play at the beginning is my newest favorite song. badass. there's a slow verse and a fast verse. they play the fast one in the intro to the show. it's almost like two separate songs....the transition begins around 2:20 to the fast.

The new HBO programming chief cancelled the show. It had soft ratings and poor critical reviews, despite costing $100 million to create the first season (more than GoT).
It would be nice to see an accurate portrayal of the 70's music business but this show barely scratched the surface. |

Yeah I was hoping they would focus on that next season instead of someones drug addiction. But, it was not to be.

Maybe it wasn't perfect, but I really wish they would have given this show a second season to develop.
