I saw (the guy from) Everclear there and had a real good time. I can't speak to acoustics, but it sounded fine to me. Nice size place, too.

Oh, Art? Yeah, he's a cool dude. Or at least he was, back in the 90's. Really talented guy that's kind of been off the radar for a while.

One thing I've noticed over the years that you have more an Alt/KROQ vibe in your musical taste. Kansas City has always been more of a butt-rock town.

How have you found the music you're into living there?

I don't care much for the music radio around here, but it's not a problem now that we have internet streams (KROQ sounds pretty good so I'll have to check out their stream) and ipods available. I listen to a lot of talk radio and podcasts anyway, so I don't listen to as much music as I used to.

As for live music, it's pretty common for bands I'm interested in to skip KC, but with the limited number of shows I go to, it's not a problem to find acts that appeal to me rolling through town. For example, I've been waiting for Brian Jonestown Massacre to come to KC since NewChief turned me on to the DiG documentary about them, but it doesn't seem like they make it here very often.

Let me know what you think about KROQ. When all the other stations in town (and the country, really) were playing Motley Crue, Ratt, Poison, Warrant and so on, they were playing Depeche, Duran Duran, Oingo Boingo, Jane's Addiction, Offspring, Bad Religion, Social Distortion, RHCP and so on.

They were truly the first alternative station in the country and MTV, when it was a music channel, used to look to KROQ for guidance.

The weird thing is that I was probably listening to Motley Crue, Ratt, Dokken, and the british guys (Priest, Maiden, etc.) back then too. It wasn't until the very late 80s and 90s when I started getting more into stuff like Jane's Addiction, Offspring, Bad Religion, etc. I guess I'm a late adopter at times. I didn't really like the Sex Pistols until they were 10 years gone, heh.

What's ironic is that L.A. was known in the 80's for the Sunset Strip scene yet in LA, those bands weren't all that popular here. The only radio station in town that played that music was KNAC, and they went out of business in early 1995, even after adding "Alternative" music in 1992.

KROQ, however, lives on.

You couldn't tell by looking at them?

They're Dutch-Indo, so not exactly Indonesian.

I'm not sure if this video is full length but there's more than an hour of this interview out there, somewhere.

Saw Van Halen in 1978/79 in New Orleans. A guy I worked with was from Cali and was bragging on them. Talked me into going. I wanted to go to see more titties.

I will always remember the first time I heard Van Halen. I remember the car, the highway, the moment as clear as it happened yesterday.

The club held about 200 people, if that. I went in the space of 4 hours from not knowing that Van Halen existed to seeing them live in a small club. I left the club that night believing I had saw greatness. I had never seen or heard anyone play guitar like I saw on that night.
