Damn I miss Dick Vermiel!

We'll never have an offense like his again. Wish he'd stuck around longer.

Drew Brees would have been the better selection, by far.
I said as much and if it weren't for that opening day concussion in 2006, Trent probably would have played another 2 years. My point is that if you can get a few years of ELITE qb play for a late first round pick, its not terrible usage of that selection. IMO the problem was Carl passing on Aaron Rodgers when Trent was already 35 years old.

My God what we could have had for 2 late first round picks...

Late? It was #12 overall, IIRC, for TrInt.

I totally agree that the better usage of that pick would have been taking Brees, in hindsight, but spending a late first round pick for 5 years of elite QB play is a deal Id do every time.
Not me.

That first year was a learning process, so Green was only "elite" (not what I'd call it, but that would only be arguing definitions) for 4 years.

That's a short window.

I would not spend a first round pick on a guy that gives me that short a window.

You're right. I thought that the pick was around 20 or so...That means we would have reached almost a whole round to take Brees and who knows if he would have worked out for KC, he didn't work out for SD.

Im still not mad that we moved the pick for Trent as much as us passing on Aaron Rodgers once Trent was already 35.

It is what it is.

Lets just hope we dont **** up our draft position and that we take Geno Smith when we have the chance to do so.

Oh, come on.

You can't say that the Chiefs would have "reached" for Brees while at the same time wished they had taken Rodgers.

The fact of the matter is that they failed on both but Brees was the more obvious choice.

He would have excelled with Vermeil, Saunders and Holmes and it wouldn't have cost the Chiefs a dime.

He MIGHT have, sure.

The fact is that Trent Green was the second most productive passer from 2002-2005 and that kind of production is worth a pick like that.

Its just a shame that 2 things didnt happen during that span

1) we didn't make a legit push to fix that defense
2) we didn't take a legit qb prospect that could take over when Trent eventually hung em up.

Aaron Rodgers went 9 picks after we took DJ...Brees went 20 picks after the pick we sent off for Trent Green and didnt do shit his first few years, either and that lead the Chargers to taking another highly picked QB to replace him with.

Shit, Eli Manning didnt want to get picked by SD because of how bad they were after 3 years of Brees (combined with tehir historic ineptitude and his dads personal failures with them)

Who knows how thing could have played out if we took him...?

Considering that most people feel that Vermeil and his staff were offensive geniuses and there was no pressure to "Win Now" back in 2001, I'd venture to guess that his time under Vermeil would have been similar to Trent's, if not unlike Brees tenure in New Orleans.

His lack of success in San Diego clearly falls on Marty's shoulders.

Who do you think San Diego wishes they had at QB these past seven seasons: Brees or Rivers?

There wasn't a pressure to "win now"? They traded a second round pick for a 65 year old coach...

If I have a choice, I take the first round QB in the draft every ****ing time, but Im not gonna get pissed because we traded for Green, either. He gave us 4 years of running an elite offense and if CP had taken the steps necessary to build a defense that could compliment that offense, we would have had a real shot at a championship in 2003 or 2005...then made the fatal flaw of not taking the gift of having Aaron Rodgers fall into his lap.

Also, didn't you just get done telling me how Dick was a fraud and how Martz was the real mind...now you think Brees would have developed under Vermiel?

I doubt you can substantiate that with language like that. Do like your other entity and go look for a way to express yourself like a normal person.
