Off Season Lets Talk Guns

Been a while since we had a guns n' ammo discussion.

Some of you are AR shooters Im sure. Im looking at a Colt 6920. Will be my first AR. Picked up a Glock this fall and really enjoy shooting it. Any feedback on that weapon?

Anyone else been in a buy/sell/trade mood with hardware?

I have know idea, but that sounds like a good place to start.
It runs fine with with cheap PMC bronze. Never have had a hiccup with with any brass cased ammo. I shoot 69 grain Sierra match king exclusively in it now that I reload.

I'm still learning alot about the AR platform, so forgive me if I'm mis-speaking here.

I thought I read somewhere that alot also depends on the barrel type? like carbine, mid-length and rifle (?). Something to the effect of depending on where the gas block/tube is on the different length of barrels can also contribute to shorrt-stroking depending on the ammo (steel or otherwise). I remember seeing some chart that showed the optimal distance of the gas tube/block from the chamber. But I'm sure the lack of expansion of the steel case in battery lets some gases escape that should otherwise flow down to the gas tube/block.

My brain is swimming from reading up on the stuff over the last month or so, so it's possible I'm way off.

Anyone have experience with Ruger Mini-14 rifles as far as things like longevity, cleaning, realiability? I shot one a bit ago and really liked how it performed, the feel, pretty much the whole package. Been thinking of this model specifically.

http://www.ruger.com/products/mini14...em%3D&sku=5816

Nice looking rifle BTW Fraz, let us know how that baby runs.

I have owned several Mini's & Ranch Mini's since high school. Garand action. & like the AK-47 they will always go bang no matter how dirty. The newer 580 series Mini has a better barrel & is less likely to string as it gets hot. The older ones like I have just need a few tweaks to shoot as well as the 580s. They will shoot any ammo in 223 or 556.
The Target Mini with the bull will only shoot 223

It's a 197 series Ranch with a Accu strut mounted to the barrel, I put 1911 buffers on both side of the operating rod before I added the scope, re-torqued the gas block down to an even 18 foot pounds.

You've got it right. There are three different possible gas systems (well, maybe more depending on how you count it) on an AR 15 pattern rifle: Rifle, Mid Length, and Carbine.

The length of the gas system and its relationship to the barrel length will impact many factors. Under gassed guns will be unreliable. Over gassed guns will prematurely wear and recoil much harder.

Generally speaking, use a carbine length system for anything under 16". The carbine gas system is probably ideal for a 14.5" barrel.

Use a mid length from 16-18". Use a rifle system for anything over 18".

My AR is a mid length with a 16" barrel. I feel like for most people's purposes, the mid length is the right length.
