49ers release WR Antonio Bryant

The 49ers released receiver Antonio Bryant on Thursday, less than a week after coach Mike Nolan met with him face-to-face in Indianapolis to discuss his situation.

A source familiar with Bryant's contract said the signing bonus he received from the 49ers last year as a free agent was tied to how many games Bryant was active. His signing bonus was reported in league documents as $4 million, but he will count only $800,000 against this year cap. Therefore, the 49ers will save about $1.5 million in cap room with the decision to part ways with Bryant.

Wow.

The 49ers are going to be going hard after WRs this offseason.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them get Joey Porter, Adalius Thomas, Nate Clemens, Leonard Davis and Donte Stallworth.

They have TONS of money.

Won't happen.

First of all, the guy will be serving a suspension at the start of next year for drunk driving/resisting arrest. Think that would send a good message to Jared Allen and the fans, about what we think about that kind of behavior?

Secondly, the guy is on his third or fourth team in about 5 years, he can't get along with any coaches, teammates dislike him...

This is the last guy I would want on my football team. I know he made 40 (count 'em) receptions last year, but no thanks.

Bryant is a #2 receiver masquerading as a #1 at best.

Lets pick him up. On the cheap, that is King Carls way. Our WR core is almost the sh*t. We have to start doing something.
