Installed new SSD and now can't Windows loader to boot - Help PLEASE!

I bought a new laptop and was intrigued with SSD. I bought a 180g Intel SSD and swapped it out with the old one. This is a mini laptop with no optical drive. I do have an external USB optical drive available.

I also have an external hard drive adapter that I could plug the old hard drive with the recovery partition to re-boot. I would prefer not to do that though because the Lenovo bloatware would be installed.

I downloaded Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool and Win 7 Pro to a jump drive which I have inserted to the laptop's USB. This was the download site.

http://www.pcworld.com/article/24899..._the_disc.html

When I turn on the computer with the Jump Drive installed, without interrupting the normal start-up it says Invalid System Disk, Replace the System Disk, and then press any key.

If I turn it on and interrupt the normal start-up process it gives me the same message.

If I turn it on without the Jump Drive and interrupt the normal start-up process it says Operating System not found.

If I turn it on and interrupt the normal start-up process I get the same message.

I also presssed enter to stop the normal start up and then F1 for the Bios Set-up. I discovered that F12, if pressed at start-up, would allow me to choose where to boot. I selected USB drive and it said Invalid system disk, replace the disk and press any key.

Can anyone help me with this? I have the Windows key for the license associated for this computer. I just need to know how to get the software loaded onto the drive (and then hope it picks-up all of my drivers.
I deleted the files from the jump drive and downloaded them again.

Did you copy the .iso file to the jump drive correctly? That would probably be my guess. You have to make the jump drive "Bootable", so the system sees it as a bootable disk. You can't simply copy the .iso file to the drive, and that part wasn't really clear in the instructions you referenced.

I just saved the file to the jump drive from the download site. I do not know how to make the jump drive bootable so I probably didn't do that. I did hit F 12 which allowed me to select which drive to boot 1st.

How do I make the jump drive bootable? Do I need to download the 2 applications again? If so, do I need to save them in a manner that makes them bootable? If so, how?

If you have the contents of the Win7 iso already correctly copied to the jump drive, then all you need to do is make it bootable. In the instructions, they kinda mention this, but it's not very clear.

Quote:
To make the USB device bootable, you need to run a tool named bootsect.exe. In some cases, this tool needs to be downloaded from your Microsoft Store account. This may happen if you're trying to create a 64-bit bootable USB device from a 32-bit version of Windows. To download bootsect:
They recommend downloading bootsect. But there's other tools that will do the same thing easier than bootsect.

Try this to make it bootable: http://www.megaleecher.net/Make_Bootable_USB

Ok, now that you've figured out how to boot from your USB drive, you're actually going to need to make it bootable. There should be instructions on how to do this from the site you downloaded the ISO from. If not, just google "install windows 7 from flash drive" and there are 3rd party tools that will help do this for you.

You have to use the Win 7 USB?DVD tool to create the bootable jump drive.

Also, be sure that the contents are on the drive correctly. Like I said, you can't just copy the single .iso file to the jump drive.

Make sure you did this correctly:

Quote:
USING THE WINDOWS 7 USB/DVD DOWNLOAD TOOL
Before you run the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, make sure you have already purchased the Windows 7 ISO download from Microsoft Store and have downloaded the Windows 7 ISO file to your hard drive. If you have purchased Windows 7 but have not yet downloaded the ISO file, you can download the file from your Microsoft Store Account.
TO MAKE A COPY OF YOUR WINDOWS 7 ISO FILE:

Click the Windows START button, and click WINDOWS 7 USB/DVD DOWNLOAD TOOL in the ALL PROGRAMS list to open the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool.
In the SOURCE FILE box, type the name and path of your Windows 7 ISO file, or click BROWSE and select the file from the OPEN dialog box. Click NEXT.
Select USB DEVICE to create a copy on a USB flash drive or select DVD disk to create a copy on a DVD disk.
If you are copying the file to a USB flash drive, select your USB device in the drop-down list and click BEGIN COPYING.
Then when those files are on the jump drive exactly the way it instructs above, run the MakeBootable app on it.

Thank You very much for everyone's help!!!!

I initially thought that once I copied the files that they would run on the new laptop. With all of your help I found out that I use the tool to copy the Win 7 OS file to the jumpdrive which made it bootable.

The 1st 2 attempts at this were on my Win 7 Pro 32 bit. It failed both times (I almost gave up.) I then tried on a Win 7 Premium 64 bit and it worked!

I am now downloading the updates. A couple websites that I read said to this with Wifi off. Not sure why. I did not turn off my wifi adapter but instead plugged in to an ethernet cable. The laptop does not know my wifi network name of password yet so it can't login to wifi.

Thanks again and if you're ever in Orange County let me know and I'll buy you a beer.

I bought the 330 Series. It was $89 if I ever get the $30 rebate.

I am hoping to end up with a nice little cheap portable laptop. I bought a new Lenovo X120e that was released 18 moths ago for $220. It is 11 inch, has 4g Ram, AMD Quad core 1.6g. I then added the SSD, all in for just over $300.

I use Outlook for Email, Explorer to surf and then a special app to login to my work desktop which is pretty lite.

I use it as my work from home computer and dock it so I am thinking the smaller size won't bother me and will be nice when I travel.

Do you get special pricing on SSD's?
