Kansas City is Fiber-Ready!

We’ve measured utility poles; we’ve studied maps and surveyed neighborhoods; we’ve come up with a comprehensive set of detailed engineering plans; and we’ve eaten way too much barbecue. Now, starting today, we’re ready to lay fiber.

As we build out Google Fiber, we’ll be taking thousands of miles of cables and stretching them across Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri. Each cable contains many thin glass fibers, each about the width of a human hair. We’ll be taking these cables and weaving them into a fiber backbone—a completely new high speed infrastructure that will ultimately be carrying Kansas Citians’ data at speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have today.

At first, we’ll focus on building this solid fiber backbone. Then, as soon as we have an infrastructure that is up and running, we’ll be able to connect Google Fiber into homes across Kansas City!

As we build, we’ll be sure to post more important updates and announcements right here.

The first 4 words are a bit (not a lot) troublesome if I'm a fiber consumer in the upper Midwest...

Who is going to get access to this? Are cable companies able to purchase it and provide it for their customers?

Good Q. Never looked into this but when the announcement came out, I thought it meant that Google is essentially launching its own cable business.

I hope that's the case.

I think it is. Google is slowly taking over the world. The machines are building The Matrix as we speak.

First to get access will be Goverment buildings and schools. Businesses and Homes will be soon after.

Google will be partnering with a local company to handle the premise install and billing but it will all be owned by Google.

Cost is supposed to be in line with what people pay now for their much slower connections. If this is all true then the cost for bandwidth in the areas that Google will be in will be dropping.

Is this going to be for KCK only for now? Any chance it will spread into surrounding suburbs?

So my TWC $53/month bill for *up to* 12 MB will hopefully drop?

Is anyone in the know on Lee's Summit providing residents with free wireless internet? I heard that recently, not sure at all on the accuracy of that statement, however.

It's all going to depend on the local governments.

Google (or anybody for that matter) is only as good as their right-of-way agreements.

Their opening statement about looking at utility poles suggests they've already failed to secure underground conduit.

If the entrenched cable and telephone companies are successful in lobbying the local governments, Google won't be able to do anything.
