*.* 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

No one else started it so here it is!

**From the 2013 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

Yeah, it was odd. Wasn't doing anything crazy at all, fairly slow pace, slight incline/decline path. Right about four miles in I started feeling something on the side of my knee.

Pretty steady pain since then. No pain in the knee, just on the outside of the knee.

I know a guy and he loved to run. He'd run all the time and he was lean and in shape but he hurt his knee. He had surgery and rehabbed by riding his bike but then when he was rehabbed he starting running again. Well his knee screwed up again so again he had surgery and rehabbed on his bike. Of course he went back to running and of course he ended up back on the cutting table....He should have stuck to the bike the pounding was just to much.

If its on the outside of your knee its not likely a knee issue.

The crappy news is it could be IT band syndrome, but they do have things you can do for that.

Better get a foam roller or a runners stick and get to work.

Here is some info.

This is unfortunately the same conclusion I came to from my online research. I realize self-diagnosis is a tricky business but the symptoms seem to match pretty well.

My wife was having IT band issues from running. Her physical therapist had her tape it up so she could run, but it didn't work. I had her try my foam roller and her problems were gone in a couple of days. It has not come back.

I had almost the same issue. IT band inflammation from all the squatting and not warming up enough. Bough a foam roller and I now roll my IT band, hips, glute & hammies for 10 mins before I squat or dead lift. Makes a world of difference.

My trainer stopped me in a set one time to have me watch a guy who had a shit tin of weight in the barbell and a couple of his buddies cheering him on. My trainer said, "Too bad it would never count as a squat." The dude wasn't even anywhere close to getting down to parallel.

It's possible for him. Probably not without some "help," but they're all on something, anyway. Now, when NFL guys say that they "put on 15 pounds of muscle," they're probably counting some fat in there, too, especially a lineman. But I wouldn't put anything past guys in the NFL, especially in the offseason.

But, awesome genetics + PEDs = possible. For you and I without steroids? Nope, not gonna happen (at least, not if you've been lifting for years like he has).

Via very basic tracking I can say that I've added approximately 20 lbs of muscle over the last 3.5 years. Initially it was happening much more quickly.
