Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

https://twitter.com/intent/user?scre...w_p=tweetembed

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

Slow down, turbo. 'During Harbaugh' was certainly above average. He was damn good.

No, I don't think that's the guy we're getting, but let's not be dishonest here; the kid's passer rating was 95 under Jim Harbaugh. He averaged 8 YPA in 2012; that's freakin' stellar. Alex Smith was absolutely a good QB in that time frame.

Ok....so I'll give him above average.....although in 8 seasons....he's only made it a full season twice now. This doesn't concern anyone?

Dalton and Smith really are the same animal. Smith's actually more mobile.

From a skills perspective, someone tell me what Dalton has that Smith doesn't. No, his arm isn't any better so don't even try that tripe. Dalton has the same slightly below average arm that Smith has. Blah blah 'look at the stats' blah, tell me what Dalton can actually do that Smith can't. He's not a more accurate passer, he's not a better decision-maker, he doesn't have a stronger arm and he's less mobile.

Dalton's the AJ Green ball delivery system and little else. Yeah, it's completely fair to compare Smith to Dalton.
i can tell you what Dalton has done that Smith has not

Andy Dalton walked into a small market losing NFL franchise and with the help of one other player not only saved the tenured head coach's job, but turned that losing culture in a winning for 2 years so far.

Alex Smith, was a first overall draft pick that went to a storied and historic NFL franchise that is used to winning with a spoiled fanbase that has been blessed with great QB play and championships for decades and he ****ing stunk up the join for 7 years.

Andy Dalton elevated and makes the Bengals team better around him.
Alex Smith had to make the 49ers make the positional talent and head coaching be all pro for him to be even sniff positive production

that is the major difference, and it is really sad. So now, Andy Dalton in now way shape or form can be the POOR man's version of a QB he is better than. Alex Smith is the poor version of him, at the ripe of age of 30 no less.

He averaged 8 yards a carry in 2012 because he very rarely threw the ball long or even intermediate. He only had 17 passes thrown over 20 yards and only 39 attempts of 11-20 yards. Even Matt Cassel threw the ball down the field with more frequency. He had 34 attempts over 20 yards and 61 attempts of 11-20 yards.

Does he have to?

Again - for the last 2 years he's had a passer rating of 95 and a better YPA than the best downfield passers in the league. No, he hasn't done it in volume, but he's been incredibly efficient.

You guys keep moving the goalposts. Smith doesn't need to improve a bit from his last 2 seasons to be a good QB - all he has to do is not regress substantially. Reid could absolutely have a huge hand in making that happen.

His last 2 seasons - his first two with good coaching - have been better than Dalton's last 2. And yes, Dalton was a rookie, but at some point rookies peak and from what I see in Dalton, I just don't see a guy that's going to get a lot better.

Dalton's just a solid QB - I don't expect him to ever be more than that. Nor do I expect Smith to be more than that.

Again - what do you see in Andy Dalton's skill set to suggest he's going to be better than Alex Smith?

Still think Charles and Bowe are going to be huge improvements over anything Alex Smith ever had in San Francisco.

Those kind of players help QB's look better (see 2010 Cassel).

Add the new OL and TE that we will add too.

Agreed - but he hit on them. While Flacco was bombing deep and coming up incomplete on a vast majority of them, Smith was chipping his way up the field.

He was asked to be a YAC quarterback. But here's the thing, that's exactly what Reid asks of his QBs. There's nothing about that that has to change.

If he shows up and averages 8 YPA by doing nothing more than throwing 10 yard passes at an 80% clip, that's fine with me. You'll keep the sticks moving, you'll keep your defense fresh that way and you'll help control the clock. It's not a bad approach if you have a physical WR like Bowe as your #1 target.

It's not a bad technique when you do it well. The 'dink and dunk' has developed a negative stigma around here because Cassel couldn't do it. But if you can churn your way up the field 8 yards at a time throwing high percentage, low risk passes, you're going to kick some serious ass.

Dalton has arguably the best ****ing receiver in football. Throw it 20yds + down the right side of the field and AJ is coming down with it. Sir Alex started elevating his play as Vernon Davis and Crabtree started growing a pair of balls and finally reaching their potential. FACT.

And despite that, he has never in his career had a year better than any of Daltons 2 years. And no, AJ Green is not arguably the best WR in football.

Why not?

He had a very strong 2011 season and got even better this last year.

He was by far the most accurate QB in the league and was on pace to throw 23 TD's.

Just because he is almost 30 doesn't mean he can't get better.

See, opposition, you assume that we are just reeling from last year. We aren't. We are reeling from decades of mediocrity, which is, understandably, all being thrown at Alex Smith.
