It's official: Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is on the air at ABC.
The Joss Whedon drama based on the Marvel Comics property has landed a series order at the Disney-owned network, ABC announced Friday.

The ABC Studios project is based on Marvel Comics' secret intelligence organization that has appeared in countless titles, including Iron Man, Captain America and The Ultimates, since being introduced in the 1960s. The military law-enforcement agency's moniker stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate, which also has evolved over time in the comics.

Whedon is on board to co-pen the pilot alongside his brother Jed Whedon and Jed's wife, Maurissa Tancharoen; the trio previously teamed on the three-part web series Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Avengers and Buffy the Vampire Slayer mastermind Whedon directed the pilot, which has had ABC social media accounts for months. S.H.I.E.L.D. is executive produced by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, Tancharoen, Jeffrey Bell and Marvel TV's Jeph Loeb.

ER's Ming-Na stars as Agent Melinda May, The Avengers' Clark Gregg reprises his role as Agent Phil Coulson, Killing Lincoln's Brett Dalton is set as gruff rising star Agent Grant Ward, Elizabeth Henstridge as science whiz Agent Gemma Simmons and Iain DeCaestecker as tech guru Agent Leo Fitz, with Nashville's Chloe Bennet set as Skye, a superhero-obsessed woman.
Since the project was first announced in August, it has been a clear front-runner to land on ABC's 2013-14 schedule. ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee told reporters in January that the project was being fast-tracked and he was "very hopeful" that the entry with a "great script" would go

"Marvel has the ability to bring the whole family around it," Lee said at the time. "Joss has great relationships around it. There's a lot of real funny male-female relationships and flirtations, but it's also Joss and Marvel, so there's a lot of action to it."

"My boss Bob Iger buys Marvel, and how wonderful is it for ABC to be able to use the core talent from that and not use the Marvel brand but the Avengers franchise for a show that is not exactly about the Avengers but is attached to it?" Lee said, noting that Whedon was already working on scripts at the time.

ABC will start a major marketing push for the high-profile project with a sizable built-in fan base Sunday, May 12, airing a first look at 8 p.m. ahead of the season finale of Once Upon a Time.

Be interesting to see how it all plays out. I've even seen one (very far fletched) theory that maybe they go into space (or rather, into orbit) and become Agents of SWORD, somehow tying in with Guardians next season, connecting back to the Kree corpse that saved Coulson and Skye.

I doubt they'd be fugitives. Unless they're on the run from elements of Hydra. I don't think there's any official organization that would be after them, though.

I think, based on the movie, that the Clairvoyant was actually Project Insight, or an individual using Project Insight, and that what we may see Tuesday is a continuation of the SHIELD/HYDRA sort-of civil war after the events of the movies.

That gets resolved, then suddenly we have, sort of similar to your a-team scenario, a rogue, unaligned team left with no connections (Fury is "dead") and no resources. You know: how do they keep the plane going with no SHIELD support? What the hell are they even going to do? They won't have anybody to rely on now.

Should be interesting. It has a potential to basically reboot the entire series, throw away all the elements that weren't working early on, and build on what has worked well over about the last half-dozen eps. When it's basically become more of a spy/thriller show than a sort of watered-down marvel universe version of the x-files, hunting their 'monster of the week' if you will.

Ward and Skye are the love interest pair...neither of them's likely to go anywhere.

I don't think there's a Hydra member on the squad. I think they'll tease it, but there won't be one.

Also mention there that Gen. Talbot (adrian pasdar) is chasing the team, so maybe the a-team comparison wasn't too far off.

I think they may have intended for the love interest pair to be Ward and Skye, but I don't think Ward is clicking with audiences (on account of his actor being terrible, and him being boring as hell), so they'll refocus it, maybe on Fitz and Simmons. Also, Ward becoming a mole will allow for dramatic possibilities with May, which she desperately needs.

I'm OK with losing Ward. As Aries Walker pointed out, he's a pretty shitty actor. Also, after he killed the invalid, he totally came off as desperate/clingy. After the Skye/Ward relationships seemed so subtle, for so long, that kind of action just screamed psycho. That or he was trying to cover for the Clairvoyant. Skye also seemed to have a WTF?! attitude about it.

Maybe it's just me, but I hope he's gone.

If they want to be dicks, they'll turn Simmons and Ward. She keeps defying Coulson by attempting to analyze the "medicine" used when the Clairvoyant could not see Coulson. Also might help explain Ward's jump to save her. She's a very likeable character so it would be a blow to a lot of the fans. Although the big blow will likely be the moping from Fitz the rest of the show.

Anyway, I'm psyched to see the next episode!

I was thinking it was Arnim Zola actually. Project Insight wasn't anthropomorphized, so I wouldn't think it would directly be the Clairvoyant. Zola could be the Clairvoyant I think, with or without the use of Project Insight. Heck, Zola may actually be Project Insight

I agree with your guess.
Yes its the easiest choice for a replacement even though he seems to get most of the air time I feel the other characters are far more developed and not as easily replaced.
As far as triplett becoming Triathalon..

I think it would be nice if they spent more time on his Deathlok look making him not look so campy and more bad ass like hes looked at times in the comics.
If I'm right though I'd need to look it up I believe there were 5 Deathloks the 5th being a Shield agent.





This show has become a nice surprise for me as it has many people.
I've collected comics for over 30 yrs but for some reason the first 5 episodes sat on my DVR until finally I watched the list thru.
I was able to simply enjoy the show for what it is and the characters have grown on me all except for Ward.
Out of all the characters he is the only one you could replace with any guy with a 6 pack. He brings nothing to the show.

I've already mentioned Deathlok is way to generic/campy for my taste but I can look past it.

One other thing imagine if they did have the rights to use Mutants and discovered it was wolverine being held or somehow the blood sample was taken/stolen from him
and the healing factor used to bring people on the edge of death back.
S.H.E.L.D.S big secret without the permission or knowledge of anyone including Logan.
That might've gotten interesting.

Sorry to Ramble stuck inside hurt my knee trying to push & be a bad ass in a half marathon ... I'm not Triathalon that's for certain.

Given the end of the last episode, I assumed the Clairvoyant was the hot MILF boss who said "Coulson is mine". Although she could be an unwitting pawn too. My bet is on Bill Paxton. The whole "seen too much, got disillusioned" thing.
