NFT: Penguins' sale falls through

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2698928

As I watch the Pens play the Isles right now, I can't help but feel excited that this team may somehow, someway find its way to KC. What a great team with a nucleus of young superstars.

PITTSBURGH -- Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie has withdrawn his offer to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins, current owner Mario Lemieux said Friday.

Balsillie, whose company makes the BlackBerry wireless messaging device, had signed an agreement on Oct. 5 to buy the Penguins from Lemieux's group for about $175 million.

But Balsillie apparently stopped negotiating with the NHL to finalize the deal, Lemieux said in a statement.

"Jim Balsillie delivered a notice of termination today, and it our understanding that he has stopped negotiating with the National Hockey League to get the necessary consent to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins," Lemieux said.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman called the developments "unfortunate" in a statement released Friday evening.

Balsillie had previously pledged he was committed to keeping the team in Pittsburgh -- a condition the NHL had all but mandated as long as a new arena is built.

Balsillie began negotiating after the Penguins and Toronto businessman Sam Fingold could not complete a deal.

Lemieux said the news creates "significant uncertainty" for the team.

"The Penguins' organization will reevaluate our situation after the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board makes the decision on the awarding of the Pittsburgh gaming license," he said.

He also reiterated the team's commitment to a plan proposed by Isle of Capri.

Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. has promised to build a $290 million arena to replace 45-year-old Mellon Arena, at no cost to taxpayers or the team, if it is awarded a license to build a slot machines parlor in the city. The other two applicants are expected to provide money toward an arena, but neither would fully fund a new building.

With the Penguins free to relocate once their Mellon Arena lease expires in June, city and county officials are working on an alternate plan if Isle of Capri does not get the license. Allegheny County chief executive Dan Onorato has pledged that an arena will be built even if it is not fully paid for with casino money, and parcels of land near Mellon Arena already have been acquired for the project.

On Friday, Bettman repeated warnings that the Penguins' future in Pittsburgh is uncertain if the Isle of Capri casino chain is not awarded a license to build a slots parlor in the city.

"If the Isle of Capri is not granted the license on Wednesday, then an already volatile situation will be aggravated," he said. "It is imperative that the Penguins have a new arena on economic terms that make sense for the franchise and for the team to remain in Pittsburgh."

Maybe the news isn't so great. According to this article he dropped out due to the NHL's stipulation that the team stay in Pittsburg regardless of the arena situation. It's hard to believe that, once the SPrint Center is built, that the NHL would want to keep a team in a place with no arena at all.

The Penguins were a great team for years but they don't mean very much anymore - unfortunately the TV contract that Bettman got, blows. I don't see anyone anymore except the Islanders and the Lightning and the Sabres. I used to be able to see more than 3 teams play each week, even on regular expanded cable. I am totally missing the good teams on TV!

Casino aligned with Pens not awarded license
ESPN.com news services

The Penguins' future in Pittsburgh might be in doubt after a casino the team had aligned with, in the hopes of getting a new arena built, wasn't awarded a slots license by the city.

PITG Gaming was awarded Pittsburgh's first license to operate a slot-machine casino, beating out two other bidders, including Isle of Capri casino, which had promised to build the Penguins a new arena if it was awarded the license.

Isle of Capri had said it will build a $290 million facility for the Penguins to replace 45-year-old Mellon Arena -- at no cost to taxpayers or the team -- if it obtains a slot-machine license from the state.

Penguins owner Mario Lemieux said this week that the Penguins would have to "consider all of our options" if Isle of Capri wasn't awarded the license.

The Penguins brass is reportedly meeting Wednesday after the Pittsburgh Gaming Board's rejection of Isle of Capri's bid.

It is not clear if the Penguins will release a statement or hold a press conference to comment on the slots license.

Earlier this week, Lemieux called a deal to sell the team to a Canadian billionaire "unequivocally" dead.

Jim Balsillie last week withdrew his offer to buy the Penguins for $175 million, but has said he might still try to purchase the team. Lemieux said that won't happen and the club will try to make Balsillie forfeit his deposit.

"We can say unequivocally that the deal with Mr. Balsillie is dead," Lemieux said. "We were shocked and offended that Mr. Balsillie would back out of such an important deal at the last minute -- and less than a week before a decision on the funding of a new arena that will have far-reaching implications on our franchise, our city and our region." he said.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Don't get excited, you are not getting that team.

Plan B will get finalized. The NHL also stands ready to block a move as shown by last week's events.

I understand that the HL is going to make every effort to keep the team in Pitt. However, at some point they will have to realize that no one wants to buld them an arena, and there is one right here that is shiny and new, and will make money for them.

If we're going to get an NHL team, the Penguins are the only one I'd want. They're the only ones that show promise (of the ones that are willing to relocate). I don't want another loser franchise here.

I can't believe that the Isle wasn't awarded a gambling license with it offering to build a stadium for the city.

It's baffling to me.
I'm cruising on the Pens message board, and as pissed as they are, some are saying the casino that got the license was just plain better for the state, arena be damned.

I hope beyond hope that this is the team moving. But I feel conflicted about it because Pittsburg fans always seem so passionate, and the Pens have always been there... I guess this is how Baltimore fans must have felt taking the Browns.

FWIW, here is what Bettman had to say before Balsille dropped out, and obviously before this vote. I wonder how his stance has changed over the past 3 weeks.
http://www.pittsburghpenguins.com/te...rts/2161.0.php

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman stressed Tuesday that the only certain way to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh is if the Isle of Capri is awarded the city’s gaming license.

“We didn’t discuss the specifics of Plan B because the plan that we’re most interested in; the plan that we want to see achieved and the plan that’s on the table is the Isle of Capri,” Bettman said. “We’re hoping they get the license. Because, if Isle of Capri doesn’t get the license, then we’ve got a lot of uncertainty to deal with. I think it’s best for everybody – the franchise, the fans of the franchise – if we’re not dealing in uncharted, uncertain waters. I did see the development project, where they are projecting to put the arena and how the Isle of Capri plans to develop this area around the arena. I think, from what I have seen of arena projects in cities, this is a very exciting project. I think it is something for the future of this city has great prospects.”

Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly were in Pittsburgh on Tuesday to watch the Penguins take on the Islanders at Mellon Arena.

Earlier in the day, the two met with Allegheny County Chief Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl to discuss the positives of the Isle of Capri plan.

“While we all agreed that it’s important for the Penguins to stay in Pittsburgh and that’s what we all want, it’s also vital that the Penguins get a new arena. They need one desperately,” Bettman said. “The league’s hope and the Penguins’ hope and strong desire is that the Isle of Capri is granted the gaming license because that is the scenario that best deals with the future of this franchise in Pittsburgh. There is no uncertainty about the future of this franchise if Isle of Capri is granted the license. We very much want to see that happen and on an expeditious base as possible because there is a lot of work that needs to be done.”

Bettman also stressed the NHL wants to keep the Penguins in Pittsburgh.

“We want the Penguins to stay here in Pittsburgh. This is a great market; there are great hockey fans. We’d like nothing better than for the Penguins to have a new arena on the right economic terms so we don’t have to worry about the long-term viability of this franchise,” he continued. “The Isle of Capri deal certainly does that. If we have to deal with anything else, then a lot of factors are in play and I can’t be as certain about the future as I can if Isle of Capri gets the license.”

“Certainty comes for this franchise with the Isle of Capri getting the license. Without it, we will enter an era of uncertainty where lots of things can happen.

In addition, Bettman believes Jim Balsille will take over ownership of the Penguins franchise in December.

“The Executive Committee of the Board of Governors is scheduled to meet with Mr. Balsille on Monday (Dec. 4) morning at our meeting. Then, we’ll report to the Board, assuming everything stays on track, sometime shortly thereafter, we’ll conduct a vote,” Bettman said. “I anticipate by sometime in mid-December, give or take, the franchise will be closed upon.”
