Chiefs announce Bray as the backup QB

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made a surprising declaration on Tuesday afternoon.

The Chiefs are still a little more than two months away from the start of training camp in St. Joe’s, but we already have some very interesting news on the depth chart front.

Reid has proclaimed that Tyler Bray, not Aaron Murray or Kevin Hogan, is entering training camp as the primary backup quarterback to Alex Smith. Murray was a fifth-round pick back in 2014 while Hogan was a fifth-round selection in April.

Despite being an undrafted free agent in 2013, Bray has stuck on the roster but never appeared or been active for a game in the regular season. He was placed on injured reserve last year after sustaining a torn ACL in a pickup basketball game.

Bray has all the physical tools you could want. He’s 6-foot-6 and 215 pounds and at 24 years old, might finally be seizing the moment after sitting behind Chase Daniel and Murray.

It will be fascinating to see if Bray can hold off Murray and Hogan in camp, not having thrown a competitive pass in two years.

It's a 3 dog fight for 2 positions and Bray is getting the 1st crack at it. Maybe he gets cut, maybe he doesn't, but at the very least it means the Chiefs believe he has a legit shot at it.

Yep, I will be shocked if he's the number 2 guy opening day, hell I'll be shocked if he's on the team opening day. The guy has a great arm, but seems dumber than a blocking sled.

It's been awhile since we've last seen him. He's had a lot of time to develop since his rookie year.

I don't think he's getting the first crack at it. It just that he needs all the reps he can get so that it's a more close positional battle in training camp. They're likely very comfortable with Murray and know he's capable. He doesn't need as many minicamp reps as Bray especially since Bray is coming off two straight years on IR.

Yes the only game he didn't play in was the 2cd preseason game. He got injured in the last preseason game against the Packers on 8/28/2014

Fact: Bray hasn't played football since 2012.
Fact: Bray was third string in 2013 and didn't see the field in practice or regular season.
Fact: Bray was placed on IR during the 2014 preseason
Fact: Bray was placed on IR during the 2015 offseason.
Fact: The Chiefs selected a QB in the 5th round of the 2014 draft.

Yet he played in preseason games in 2014. I think that counts as playing football.

I don't necessarily think he is our starting QBOTF like is thrown around here so easily, but you never know he might be the next Romo.
