Game of Thrones (spoiler-free zone)
A few have suggested it, might as well test the waters. The idea is to give people who haven't read the books a safe place to talk about the show.

A few quick ground rules:
  • No Spoilers!!!!! for upcoming episodes.
  • Larger Song of Ice and Fire discussion should be limited to the other thread although I think a tiny bit of book delving to fill in holes should be okay (example of this would be talking about Catelyn and her treatment of the wolves in the novel, which was alluded to on TV but never really made clear...)
  • Everything that happened that week is fair game once an episode airs. So if you don't watch on Sunday night, I'd stay outta here until you do...

I actually do care, enough that I Googled it before I posted. Unfortunately, when I saw "Bravos" in the Wiki for Ice and Fire, I didn't realize that it was an entry for the men of Braavos.

Do any of the other non book readers suddenly find themselves tempted to start reading the books so you don't have to wait 8 months to continue with the story?

On the one hand it would give me the immediate satisfaction I am craving, but on the other, the show would probably lose a little excitement. Then, once I am done with the books I would be right back to where I am now with waiting for the next season. Craving more with no choice but to wait, except this time it would be a wait for the books, instead of the current wait for the show.

At this point, it's probably not a good idea. First, as you said, you're eventually just going to get caught up and be in the same position you're in now. Second, due to the divergences from the source material and the amount of stuff left out, you'll have to start from the beginning. Given their size, unless you're unemployed and single, it will take you a while to get through them.

I would, however, suggest reading the books when everything is said and done. The world is just so much richer.

I get the urge to do it after every season ends. After S1, I even read the 1st book. But that urge eventually passes. I always figure that with the TV series being so good, why risk ruining that experience at all? And it's also not like reading all the books will get you any closer to a conclusion as there are still books left to come.
