Question about Brees/Franchise Tag

Can't any team now make Brees an offer to be the richest QB in NFL history and if the Saints don't match it, they have to give up a 1st and a 3rd and a new team gets Brees?

I don't get why the Saints wouldn't just pay him to be the richest QB ever on their own if they really want to keep him.

I think a team like the Chiefs or Broncos or even the Niners who don't have a top first round draft pick would immediately offer Brees a contract.

Am I wrong about this?

Sorry if this has already been discussed, I'm usually around here all week, but new job, no internet for me anymore.

It's the exclusive tag. No team can talk to him.

Until when?

I didn't even realize such a tag existed.

Yeah, they pay something like $2 million more than the franchise tag to make it the exclusive tag so that he can't talk to any other teams this year. He can't talk to other teams until next year's free agency.

Can you use the Exclusive tag on a player more than once?

Wow, I can't believe that thing exists, that's sort of bullshit, IMO.

After all this going down, I could see Brees leaving NO if he has the chance.

Yep, he really took offense to the (what he considered) "lowball" offer that we gave him. I wouldn't be surprised if he takes as much offense to what the Saints are doing.

However, he is the key figure in bringing so much joy to the people of that area. I think he's really connected to the fans there, so that might keep him from wanting to go elsewhere.

From BobGretz.com:

There are two types of designations: the exclusive rights franchise tag, and non-exclusive rights franchise tag:

An “exclusive” franchise player must be offered a one-year contract equal to an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player’s position over the last five seasons or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, whichever is greater. Exclusive franchise players cannot negotiate with other teams.

A “non-exclusive” franchise player must be offered a one-year contract for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player’s position over the last five seasons, or 120 percent of the player’s previous year’s salary, whichever is greater. He may negotiate with other NFL teams, but if he signs an offer sheet, the original team has the right to match terms of that offer. If it does not match the offer, the club received two first-round draft picks as compensation.

Obviously the teams designate which they are using, and the Saints did not say hey everyone is allowed to negotiate with our franchise QB.

That doesn't say anything that the exclusive rights tag pays more.

I didn't realize it was two firsts. I thought it was a first and a third for some reason.
