Awesome Lent Sacrifice
Was at my church's Shrove Tuesday thing tonight. One of the most fun events we have as a church. We went outside to burn the palms, and the Father was asking if anyone was giving up anything for Lent.
Some six year old shouted out, "I'm giving up explosives!" Awesome moment. |

That's awesome.
I stopped giving up stuff for Lent. I figure it's not much of a sacrifice if I only do it for 40 days. Plus, I think the purpose of Lent is to renew one's spiritual life, so my idea in that is to enhance my life so that I have a stronger connection to God. So instead I started to sacrifice time to take on things God might want me to take on. So instead of my five minute break perusing CP, I might use that to turn to God in prayer or song. But this year, I decided that one of the things I can do to grow deeper in God's love is to start eating together as a family with my child instead of all of us eating separately or she eats and then we eat later after she goes to bed. I think it's best for her spiritual connection as well as mine for us to engage in that thing that will make us love each other more, breaking bread. That's deep, I know. But it's Ash Wednesday and well, that's part of me.

Gave my boy a bag of shrimp fries/chips, he ate a few and handed the bag back. I asked what he thought...'at the end...it tasted like...cat'

Quite a few of our coworkers observed the Ash Wednesday every year. One time a coworker asked me what I would give up for lent, I said that I didn't intend to give up anything. He looked at me with a "Oh, you sinner" expression.
Then I asked a young woman what did she give up for lent. She replied, "If I tell you what I give up, it won't be a sacrifice anymore." |
