Vegging it for 40 days?

I'm not Catholic, so I never observe Lent. However, I'm considering giving up meat for 40 days. I haven't had any today, so I figure I have until lunch to consider it. I know I'm talking to a group of grillers in the BBQ capital, but maybe there are some vegetarians in the group? Any advice?

True. I guess the point is many of these individuals don't just eat meat - they eat processed meat and top it with processed cheese and put it on processed, high sugar bread with tons of mayo and sugary ketchup, eat it with greasy sodium-overdosed french fries and wash it all down with a tub of soda.

Maybe fat isn't the best description - and as above it matters how and what you eat it with. Also, cutting excess weight can be done by consuming less calories than what you burn - no matter what you are eating.

A 24 oz sirloin has about 1400 calories.

You eat that and you're gonna be full for a good part of the day. I'd EASILY skip a meal.

Down a bag of chips and see what happens in 3 hours.

Here's another thing I'll say about vegetarianism:

Eating out can be a real challenge if you're trying to keep weight off. A lot of people fall into the "sides" trap.

That is: they just order a bunch of sides as their meal. That can be fine (beans, greens, complex grains, raw veggies) unless you fall into the mac and cheese, cheesy potato bake, and awesome blossom trap of "Oh, these don't have meat. Healthy!" Sounds ridiculous, I know, but I have some friends who are hard core vegetarian and eat like that, then wonder why they don't lose weight or feel good.

I would suggest you keep a journal of EVERYTHING you eat during that time. It is really amazing what we eat when we don't think about it. If you are conscious about what you eat, you make better decisions about what you eat.

as do veggies - eat a bag of broccoli and you'll be stuffed too

although not as stuffed as the steak

and the steak is much more delicious.

Luv, I think we all agree that you shouldn't just totally cut out meat (even if we are arguing back and forth about stupid crap)

Moderation is the key to everything. I've lost 40 pounds since October and all I've really done is eat smaller portions and completely cut out sugary drinks (I do allow myself one Pepsi a month).

This place is definitely slipping. All this talk about meat and protein with Luv being the thread starter and not one joke about if she will be cutting sausage out of her diet or any suggestions on where she could pick up extra protein. I am disappoint.

Completely up to you. Lots of vegetarians are actually pescatarians. There's also lacto/ovo. Then there's hard core vegan.

Hell, my wife is a vegetarian except for bacon, which she'll eat occasionally.

I'm going to make this change. The 40 days gives me a goal. I think that, by the time the 40 days is up, I won't even realize it's been 40 days. Giving myself that time will help keep me on track while I make the adjustment.
I'm not a vegetarian or a pescatarian, or any other label but my diet mostly consists of plant-based, whole foods. I don't eat fish all the time but I also don't limit it from my diet. When I am at a restaurant, in lieu of a vegetarian option, I'll generally order seafood over meat or poultry.

It's really not difficult. Some of my favorite vegetarian cook books (for quick & easy recipes with readily available ingredients) are:

http://www.amazon.com/The-30-Minute-...ute+vegetarian

http://www.amazon.com/Vegan-Cheap-Re...arian+cookbook

I eat a lot of soups & stews. Be wary, though, when buying certain packaged ingredients (if you don't make your own broth/stock or don't cook your own beans) to look at the sodium content.

good idea

measuring portions out to see how much you are eating can also be surprising.
