NFL considers dropping the Pro Bowl

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/goodell...6848--nfl.html

Quote:
NEW YORK (AP) -- The NFL will consider dropping the Pro Bowl if the level of play doesn't improve, Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday night.

Appearing on SiriusXM NFL Radio's ''Town Hall,'' Goodell agreed with host Michael Strahan that last January's Pro Bowl ''was embarrassing.''

''If we cannot accomplish that kind of standard (of high play), I am inclined to not play it,'' Goodell said. ''It is really tough to force competition, and after a long season, to ask those guys to go out and play at the same level they played is really tough.''

The league still would select a Pro Bowl team through voting by players, coaches and fans, because it is an honor, but ''just not play the game,'' he said.

The Pro Bowl will take place in January, a week before the Super Bowl, after the players lobbied to keep it, promising to upgrade their performances. Goodell and others were disappointed in the quality of last year's Pro Bowl, won 59-41 by the AFC and missing any semblance of hard hitting.

Never gonna happen and it if did, same results. Todays players are never going to go "all out" for a meaningless exhibition game. Also, imagine if a teams star player got hurt/out for season during the Pro Bowl a few weeks before the regular season?

When douchebags like Cassel can back into the Pro Bowl, it shouldn't exist.

Most of the time, your Super Bowl teams are going to have a good amount of players that should be playing in the pro bowl. Just put it back to AFTER the Super Bowl.

This event is the dumbest and worst of all major all-star games by a wide margin. Hockey is getting close with their 16-14 scores and no goal tending or defense but the NFL guys play games and do silly shit the whole time during the game.

I don't need this game and quite honestly who wants to watch a guy get seriously hurt in this stupid event.

Vote for the All Pro's and send them and their families to Hawaii or some nice place for a week. Film all the pro's during the week and make it an hour show. People will like it more than the stupid Pro Bowl

I think the NHL does a good job with their all star game (weekend), though scho63 is right that no one takes it seriously. It's in the middle of the season, so players are clearly not going to play all-out, and I don't think they should be expected to.

The game is really just part of a full event with (do I hear an echo in here?) a skills competition, a rookie game, and a variety of other things like that. If the NFL would just stop taking itself so seriously and make the event fun for everyone, it might be worth keeping.

Or they could just can the whole thing. That's fine too.

Do away with probowl and honors. Have divisional skills competions by points.

Qb, wr, te, rb, ol, dt, de, lb, s, c, k, p. Best of each division goes up against another division points wise during skills test.

Winner goes on. Two days worth of tv.

I was about to post a similar concept, but I like yours better. Stuff like this is a lot of fun to watch, as opposed to a very bad exhibition game. And I suspect that player egos would keep it competitive.

The awards show concept would be interesting, sort of like the ESPY's but in addition to naming the All-Pro's, have your coach of the year, MVP, rookie of the year, comeback player of the year, most outstanding play, etc.

Still think it should just be a skills competition.

40 Yard Dashes, High Jumps, QB Drills...that kinda shit.

The other issue for owners is that, when 8 guys drop out of the pro bowl with hangnails, you end up with the Matt Cassels going. Now when it comes time to do contract negotiations, there are nine guys all claiming they were in the pro bowl.

And not a **** was given. I don't even give a darn if this is a repost, because I am not going to read a thread about the probowl.

Give each player an award and don't bother with the game.
