I'd love to own a nice F150, Silverado or Tacoma. But, I don't have a garage big enough to hold it. and if I'm shelling out north of $30k, I wouldn't want it sitting outside.

I've generally been pleased with our F-150 but we started to run some numbers on it this weekend after the power steering pump went out and I began to question it a little more.
The AC system had to be replaced after the system just started draining coolant onto the floorboards due to poor welds. It had done enough damage to itself that we were able to salvage parts of it but it cost about $900 to fix. The rear defroster went out and they want $2k to fix it at the dealership (so that's just not getting done). Now the sliding rear window has also broken so we have to make sure to push it back shut in case it rains (no latch on the power slides and it will vibrate itself open). The brake rotors warped despite having 50% life left on the pads and only 65K miles on the truck. We were advised it's 'a known problem with F-150s'... The motor on the passenger running board has stripped a gear so every time you stop and start it sits there and spins. Oh yeah, and now the power steering pump eating shit on the nastiest weather day of the year. To have fixed everything there has been to fix on this truck (and I'm sure I've missed something) would be around 5-6 grand in 5 years of ownership. My Buddy has an eco-boost F-150 and his motor had to be replaced at 66,000 miles. Honestly, I'm thinking that maybe these trucks aren't nearly as good as we just always assume they are. Their reputation is sterling and I LOVED my 2000 Explorer. But this truck has been something of a pain in my ass. I think my next one will be a Tundra.

I have a 2008 Tundra that I bought from my Dad who purchased it new. The only issues we've had in 90k were related to corrosion from the factory battery and fixed under warranty. Other than that, it's been 100% reliable and I love driving it. He picked up a 2014 and it's nice too.
That being said, until there is a redesign, I'd be looking at F150's and Silverados because they've evolved more. The Tundra is still using the same drivetrain from 2007 and while it's reliable, the gas mileage is pretty bad. I'm lucky to get 13-16mpg doing 65mph on the highway. |

Yeah, I really like my old Chevy Silverado.. been eyeing some of the newer ones, but not really in the market yet. 160k on my old truck with very few problems.
I think the Tundras look better than they used to ( less jelly beany ) but would want to see something really good about them from Consumer Reports. I .. uh.. wouldn't call it a "problem" per se.

I'm just going to try and hijack this thread some, anyone have experience with the Infiniti G37? I'm currently paying off some stuff that needs to go, but I'm going to look at these because I want a car that's fun to drive.

For the imports, I honestly think that Mazda has the best 'fun to drive' cars out there. The problem is that the 6 is getting some age on it now and I think they're due for a new one in a year or two. The concept they came out with a year or so ago was purty.

Dad bought a new one in 08, and it now has 160 or something on it. He had a warrantied O2 sensor, and that is IT besides wear items. We did have a jackass kid working for us that FUBARed the tire pressure sensor, but that is our fault, not Chevy's. And beating them through fields and down the shithole roads where it lived most of it's life is a tough tough ask. He replaced it with a 2013 that had like 13K on it when he bought it and the only problem he has had has been with the aftermarket pussy ass steps someone before him put on. Again, the shit roads and fields that it has lived its life in. I have a 2010 that I bought with 20K. The only problem I have had is a small A/C leak that the mental midgets at the dealership can't seem to find, and I have been kind of hard on the reverse sensors, but that is exclusively due to corn stalks. Mine has a goofy size of 22" tires that are kind of expensive when it comes to buying shoes for it, but it is a very good pickup. Almost all the miles on mine are the jankety county roads also. Before that, I had a 2006 with a salvage title that I dumped at 140,000ish. The powertrain was quite reliable but the cab was about to fall clear apart. Again, roads. The 2008-2013 body style is a far sturdier and comfortable cab. I think If I was just driving in town as a daily driver, the damned things would last forever. But the roads get so blown out and washboarded to hell when it is dry and are a ****ing rutted up trainwreck when it rains, that there is a precious few days after it rains when they can grade them properly before they get blown out that the roads are actually worth a ****. Mud gets everywhere and that concerns the hell out of me, but we haven't had problems. The dirt and sand do abuse the tires and brakes pretty hard, but that is expected. Not to mention these are all half tons, and we are idiots, and tie on to 20,000 lb nurse trailers or header trailers, or think we can pull 15000 lb worth of seed on a car trailer. Then we drag it through ditches and creek bottoms that we have no business crossing with a pickup. Moreover, when fieldwork starts our maintenance intervals tend to get...stretched a bit. |

Probably gonna get another 4+ years out of this one (clock on that will start whenever I replace my sedan) and by then they'll all have new body styles anyway.
I'm not particularly brand loyal at this point though my dad's always had Chevys. I'll give them all a look when the time comes. It'll probably cost $70K for a base 2WD by then (****ing trucks are ridiculous these days...)

And not to go off on a rant here....**** it. I'm going to rant.
Pickups are ****ing great form an electrical perspective. Pickups are made for the highway. The idea of a "work truck" is long ****ing gone. These things are made for town. Any argument otherwise is an exercise in futility. So they're made to go down the highway. Buehler445 takes them out in the country and beats the bejesus out of them. They all have sensors in every damn thing, and they just work. (Unless you drive through cornstalks and rip off the aforementioned reverse sensors). Contrast that with ****ing Deere, their shit is madeto be in the field, and I can't manage to keep a damn sensor in any of my shit. It is never the powertrain in any of the shit that goes wrong that I have to stop and fix. It is invariably a goddamned mother****ing electrical problem. Drives me insane. And we aren't kicking on a light on a $30,000 vehicle. We are shutting down a $300,000 tractor and potentially $250,000 of implement (Or combine or sprayer or whatever). Appreciate your pickups, men. /rant |

As far as the value, come out here. They don't even use lube on pickups these days. They just fist you with a medieval gauntlet. So much to the point that I had considered getting a sedan to commute to the farm and leave the pickup parked, but the roads and shit are harder on them, and it didn't pencil, but GODDAMN sedans are so cheap compared to pickups. Honestly, though, if you are having problems or you have a lemon, it may pencil out to trade into an older one, like a 10 or 12 or something with comparable miles. If you are kicking out a grand a year in repairs, which will likely become magnified with age, that will overcome some trade difference. |

If Chevy made combines and tractors, I'd be trading today. I shouldn't bitch about the sprayer too much. It has been nice to me. But the rest of the shit - OUT.
