Sure, there will be cheaper tablets out there, but Apple is going to dominate this part of the market. They're ahead of everyone by a LONG, LONG ways. By the time these $150 tablets are out people will have already bought 2, 3, 4 iPads and Apple will laugh all the way to the bank.

I'm sure a lot of people wish that there was a car maker out there that could match Mercedes or BMW for the price of sub KIA. There was probably a day when people would be out claiming some new car maker was going to kill these guys and beat them in every imaginable way. Except they never did. People are still willing to pay more for those cars, no matter what anyone else makes.

Sweating over tablets is a dumb game. Apple already won this game. If Android wants to do something amazing, figure out what's next, and beat Apple to that one....

(disclaimer: the only Apple product I own is an iPod touch, although I do plan to buy an iPad, and a kindle, and probably a Nook Color as well.)
wow, you compare Apple to Mercedes... well guess what... Mercedes doesn't hold a huge market share.. they are a luxury niche.. same place Apple will be in a few years.

And unless Apple plans on releasing 2,3,4 new tablets in the next 2 years then your timeline is pretty damn far off too.

I am not saying Apple is going anywhere.. I am just saying their market share is... They will happily settle into a 15-20% role just like they have with Macs. It's the same business model, it stands to reason the results will be the same.

The camera on the iPad/iPad 2 is meant for FaceTime/Skype chats. I'm sure it works fine for that. If you actually wanted a legitimate camera, go spend 700 dollars on a fricking camera. They exist, and they're brilliant, and they're superior to any camera attached to any tablet. Why? Because they were designed to be a chuffing camera.

*I know you didn't actually bring up the camera directly, but it's in the image and that stuck with me most.

There will be the SONY Android tablets to compete head to head with Apple... both will be overpriced and hold a small market share... but the Dell, Asus, etc tablets will be high enough quality to be the bulk of the market.

And they'll still make billions. And I'm sure they'll be very happy with that. Though I doubt they'll take 15-20% if Microsoft doesn't have a legit Windows-based option. You're saying the iPad will ultimately share the same fate as the Macs, but the flipside is, it dominates the market like the iPod does. It could really go either way.

Actually it's the quality of BOTH cameras... the iPad's Facetime camera sux ass but you are right it is fine for what it does... but there is NO excuse for the crap camera they put on the other side.

No, no it really can't... NO ONE wanted the MP3 player market until MS came in years late to the game... this is not at all the same.. EVERYBODY is getting in the tablet game and relatively early.

Why do you mention MS here? Android is the competition in the OS space and they already have a better OS out... now it's just a matter of time while the apps catch up.

If the goal of business is to make money I'd say Apple has done just fine as the "luxury niche." Matter of fact, in the auto industry the luxury niche is and has been killing it for years, the guys racing to the cheapest price are losing money hand over fist.

Apple's business model is quite good here. The iPhone has been out for how long now and there's phones that people will argue might be better.....The only person arguing there's competition to the iPad currently is you. (of every person in the entire world)

I don't understand why people get so spun up over this stuff. If you hate Apple, or hate the iPad, or whatever, so be it. Don't buy one. Problem solved and you can spend your time focused on something that matters....

(I forgot to add before---I have a blackberry POS model now, the newest one on Sprint. My company is getting us new phones this week, so pretty soon I'll have an iPhone too. We were going to get Evo4G's, but the bosses decided the iPhone was a better business phone for us I guess.)

I don't HATE the iPad ( i bought one for my girlfriend for Xmas) as much as hate the closed model it represents.. I don't care about company profits... I am arguing what the future of the tablet world will look like..regardless of who is making the most money at it.

I personally can't use a true tablet because it doesn't have enough functionality for me.. iPads probably never will. If Intel and MS get their act together, they would probably provide the most useful tablet for me.. I doubt that happens. I do however see an Android tablet being both open enough and powerful enough for me at some point... possibly this Fall more likely a full year from now.

Again though, I am arguing because I enjoy pointing out the inconsistencies in the blind faith people have that the iPad will dominate the market forever... same people were saying the same thing about iPhones which we are watching decline as cheaper Android phones saturate the market... and that market share grab hasn't even BEGUN to start to take hold like it will as the smartphone market replaces the legacy market.

If tablets truly are the way computing is to be done in the future you can't honestly expect the largest computer company in the world to just sit on the sidelines. Android has a lot of support among tech circles, but until microsft gets involved, the public perception is probably going to be that the phone companies and apple are trying to outdo each other with gadgets, not that this is the new way of modern computing.

I disagree it won't take MS to get involved for tablets to keep evolving toward more productivity... the way the application world is moving to cloud computing. BUT that isn't to say that MS won't get involved... but it will be tough unless Intel can get back in the game with something to compete against the Tegra3. Otherwise MS will have to do a complete OS rewrite for ARM and lose the x86 leverage they have.

You'd have to address the rise in % of the market in smart phone usage as well. The iPhone is the best selling phone of all time, what a dog.

I'd love to see Android catch up with the iPhone and iPad, same with Windows and whoever else. Problem is, they're SO far behind by the time they do Apple will be on to the next thing. Wish they'd look ahead and try to beat Apple to the punch, rather than catch up with them. I won't hold my breath, after adwords Google hasn't really come up with any unique ideas on their own, they just take other companies ideas and try to make them better. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's buzz.

Then without Microsoft, it's going to remain a niche/novelty product and Apple will continue to dominate.

No not at all. I'm pretty sure the guys at HP don't think so either... they are counting on WebOS and their tablets to be FAR more than novelty items... they are banking on it as a matter of fact.
