***OFFICIAL Lawn and Landscaping Thread***

So, who out there is obsessed with having green grass?

Are you installing a flowerbed and some shrubs?

Do you need a sprinkler system installed?

Do you just want to brag?

Let's talk about lawns in here.

Are you like pete and are easily scared and intimidated by bright lights on your neighbor's back deck?

In 2011 I moved from Baltimore to an age 55+ community in central Florida, about an hour north of Orlando. It's called The Villages, it's the largest retirement community in America, 35 sq miles and population is about 105,000. They are building new homes at a rapid pace, there are over 500 new homes available now. The recession hasn't hurt this place.

I live in what's called a courtyard villa, we have the only homes which are allowed a fenced in back yard. The villas are masonry, not cement block, the exterior walls are poured concrete using forms. Homes are very well insulated, my electric bill is about $85 a month. We are on the bottom end of the price range, most homes here sell in the $300K to $400K range. The only negative about our home is the 1-1/2 car garage, that's a 12' door. In front of the door is a horizontal sliding screen. This way you can keep your door open all day and not worry about bugs and snakes. We also have gators in a pond about 100 yards away. The garage is just big enough for a small car and a golf cart. Some people love their golf cart and take it everywhere. I prefer air conditioning and a radio, so I only take my cart out when I go to the golf course. We have 12 full size golf courses, 9 of them are 27 holes. My cart is a Yamaha gas model, cost $10,000 new in 2011.

We have pretty much a maintenance free yard. The watering is done with irrigation on a timer, two nights a week. The water is recycled from the ponds and lakes in the community. That's a Sylvester Palm in the front and a Queen Palm by the front door. We used landscaping rock instead of pine bark, most people use rock.

Ours is pretty good, and I've never heard an actual case of them writing a fine. People have received warnings, but no fines. It seems like it takes a lot for them to write something up.

That's a good rate. Really good. I've never paid under $150. And never felt I got my money's worth. Just headache over a weed that I sprayed yesterday and is not quite dead yet.

Yea I won't complain. There are a few nice parks that I walk to and run sprints in. Well maintained playground equipment that kids are always on. Great and colorful vegetation and some monster pine trees (I love this look here) in most park areas along with grass.

They aren't super picky on the front yard but enough that people don't leave shit out there. They've never gotten on me about any weeds and sometimes I'll have a few out there during the week that I don't get to right away. I've never had a problem.

The back yard was the worst. Knee high garbage that I had to let the mower chew through while taking breaks in between rain spurts. Rain is so cool!

My yard doesn't look good yet. And there is absolutely no landscaping aside from the seven or so mature trees on the lot. That's my wife's shit. I'll mow and weed eat, but I'm not landscaping.
I mowed my lawn the entire time we were under contract and the day before our movers showed up. I didn't want to do the neighborhood like that not mowing it and I knew it was likely the last lawn I'll ever mow in my life. I had a city lot it KC, took me 15 minutes to mow, front and back. That gets classified as a park in Chicago.

This guy was a nancy from I could gather and did not own a lawnmower. He didn't want to shell out the cash to have the yard mowed again. It's about a 1/2 acre lot, so I don't know what that would have cost the dude, but it sure as shit would have been nice to not move in with a hay field in the back yard.
