Movies

Yeah, so I saw a lot of movies this weekend.

Elizabeth: The Golden Age - Mediocre, at best. Slow and dragged on. Shorten it to 2 hours and it's golden. It's not, so it fails.

Michael Clayton - Amazing. Everything about it is awesome. However, it's VERY complex and mind bending. You have to think, so be prepared. I still feel like I'm missing key details of exactly what happened. Gotta see it again.

Across the Universe - Perfect is one word that comes to mind. It just works. And, contrary to many people I bet, the movie is best viewed sober. Trust me.

You didn't like Donnie Darko? Clearly you're not smoking enough weed before you watch movies.

I'd need something substantially stronger than weed to make me like Donnie Darko.

One of my old favorites, "Swimming with Sharks" was on HDNet the other night. It's definitely my favorite Kevin Spacey performance and just a great under the radar movie overall.

I liked the movie overall, and I understand why it ended like it did. But after a great movie like that the ending left me cold
I'm sorry, but it seems that you're not smart enough to properly engage with art.

Your right, I only took 8 years of filmmaking and screenwriting. Have my own production company and several short films, including a full length project in the works. Clearly I know nothing about film. reerun

I was trying to make a subtle tie-in with Jenson's earlier post about how someone doesn't need to be a critic or be super-smart to enjoy the movie.

Just because I was joking doesn't mean you or frazod are off the hook for not seeing the brilliance of NCfOM's ending.

Frankly, I think No Country is the Coens' finest work yet, and I'm a huge fan of theirs.

And I don't think there could be a better ending for it. But then, I'm a movie snob and former critic, so my opinion doesn't matter.

I understand why they did it. I also realize that it makes a ton of sense artistically. Im basing my opinion solely on how it made me feel when it ended, which was unfulfilled. It was an amazing movie, I just feel like it suddenly ended without feeling like and ending. Like I said before, I have no problem with the bad guy winning/killing the good guy/getting away, more power to them, but at least end an epic movie like that epically, which I dont feel they did. I know its insanely close to the book, so I dont blame the Coen Bros at all. Great movie, unfulfilling ending

You're supposed to be unfulfilled. Then, on introspection as to why you were unfulfilled, you would ideally explore the film and what it is doing and realize that you were set up to feel that way, etc. I can't see how anyone who gets what the film was commenting on could be unsatisfied with the ending once it all clicks for them.

I don't exactly remember Tommy Lee Jones lines from the end of the movie, but I believe they are something like, One Second you're here, the next you're not...which pretty much sums up the way the movie ended.

I can't believe this movie is even generating a debate. I had no problem with it whatsoever and enjoyed ALL of it.
If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the last scene the killer going to the house that the girlfriend was hiding out in?

That was the second to last scene. The last scene was him driving away and getting hit by that car and talking to some kids and walking away. I probably would have been ok if the movie had ended after the girlfriend scene, with his just walking away. But the whole car accident thing felt unnecessary. I only saw it once, i know there was meaning in that scene that i recognized at the time, i forget what it is now though. Im sure it was more of the same message as the rest of the film which i feel got drilled into our heads throughout the movie anyway. Like I said, great movie, mediocre ending, good themes, good characters, overall excellent movie, but not perfect
