Hell, take out JCs legendary YAC performance in the raiders game, and the guy only throws 1 TD per game, and ya'll want to give the man Tom Brady money.

Crazy.

Im still firmly on the "Alex Smith is JAG" fence post. Hes not utter dogshit like Cassel, but he isn't someone I want to see the Chiefs latch onto for long term. Period. Settling for mediocrity at the QB position has been KC'S MO since Green left. Im tired of the shit, but if the fanbase gobbles it up, why would they do anything more?

Smith will NEVER be a guy who can elevate the talent around him. He will NEVER be a guy that you can put the game on his back and tell him to go win it. Best you get with him is "Meh, dont screw it up"
You'd have a point if Smith didn't have a bunch of 4th quarter comebacks to his name.

If you think 11 in 9 years is a bunch, I guess.

In comparison, Stafford has 10, Josh Freeman (lol) has 9 and Luck and Wilson both have 8 - and they are all 26 or younger.

Cutler, (16) Ryan, (17) Romo (20) and Roethlisberger (23) have "a bunch".

Mark Sanchez has 12. So yeah Alex isn't doing so hot in that category.

Smith was drafted at 20 and barely 2 years in a shotgun wacky offense in a WAC conference.

He was not ready to be an NFL QB. He sucked hardcore. The team was utter crap.
2006 was a new coat of paint on a rusty POS team with Norv, Antonio Bryant and Larry Allen. Smith was still bad.
2007 gets injured and the team is utter crap again
2008 injured
2009-2010 a guy who was unfit to be a HC who pulled the strings to put a idiotic offense in place. You guys remember that game in early 2010? KC knew exactly what the 49ers were going to do.
2011-2012 a HC who played things very very safe. Partly for good reason. No official training camp. WR depth chart was crap and the O-Line young and terrible at pass protection.

And did you miss all of 2013? The 49ers passing total was exactly the same as it was in 2011. I was told for sure it was just because Alex Smith is a game managing mediocre at best QB?

Seven. Six of those in 2011.

In comparison, Romo had 4 last season alone, and has more in the last three years (13) than Alex does in his entire career.

Matt Ryan has as many in the last three years (11) as Alex has in his entire career.

Joe Flacco has as many in the last three years (11) as Alex has in his entire career.

Sorry, you asked.

Team wins and losses, postseason or regular season, is a terrible way to justify or denote QB play.

The problem is that we don't know that he will continue to progress.

It's entirely possoble he'll be back to the checkdown king.

I've got a good feeling about him. I'm not ready to hand him a deal with $19 a year or whatever it sounds like he's asking for, but I think we'll be seeing a more aggressive version of Smith next year.

Weeden had a 370 yard game last year.
Might of had something to do with 261 of he with help from Josh Gordon.

Go back and count up the games in Alex Smith's career where outside of the QB, the HC/OC System + Targets + Pass Protection was what you could call good. Not great or the best. Just good. Like 10th best situation for a QB out of 32 teams.

I'd say only time was the 8 games to start 2012. Probably right around 10th best. Still not great but at least some quality and depth at WR/TE. Blocking was also good now that the garbage was thrown out and young OL had some experience.
Rush yards a game was 169. Defense was great other than @ MIN.
In 4 or 5 of those games the 49ers dominated.
Smith only averaged 26 passes a game when the NFL avg was 35.
But it was a very efficient completing 69% of them.

The best QBs can excel with mediocre stuff supporting them.
Alex Smith is not that.
Maybe not even very good. Maybe only 11th best.

After this season plays out KC has a choice of are we good enough to mortgage the future for 1 all in run at winning as Charles is nearing 30. Or do they begin a reshuffle and keep draft picks and cap space.
Depends on how a few of the big variables play this year. We'll see.

Here is a funny coincidence.

Shaun Hill was a 49er in 2009 started and played
5.5 games
87-155
943 yards
5 TD 2 INT

Alex Smith comes in the next
4.5 games
95-155
1035 yards
9 TD 7 INT

Now come 2010 Shaun Hill was on the Lions starts and finishes 9 games
he has passing totals of
222 yards
227 yards
237 yards
258 yards
285 yards
289 yards
323 yards
331 yards
335 yards

300 YARD GAMES!!!!!!!!!
AND AVG IS ABOUT 280 !

SHAUN HILL IS A GREAT QB

This place has lost its middle ground and with it, any semblance of realistic, balanced football discussion.
I don't know. I think the political forum has allowed the board to survive longer than it would have without it. I don't want to even think about how uncivil this place might be if all the DC bullshit was on the front page.

I think the reason for the change in the board psyche is simple attrition. This place is pretty old, in internet terms. Think about some of the people posting a decade ago that were major contributors to the quality of the discussion at that time. Some are still here. Some have left. There's even been a death or two. In any event, there's been more net loss than there has been gain. At least in my opinion. There's more trolling now. There's a lot more poster v poster argument as opposed to on-topic discussion (although there's always been some of that...). That's not to say it's all bad, or that it's a terrible place. It's not. It just seems to be harder to find good discussion.

I don't think the team sucking for 15 years has helped either. When we started up in the early 00's, the team was coming off what most people (me obviously being one of the exceptions...) considered a really good decade. There were a lot of wins, whether you liked Marty or Carl or not. Now...it's just been bad. Really bad. I think it's fair to say it's a little harder to be a fan now than it was in the late 90s. Not sure we knew how spoiled we really were back then. That's got to have some impact on the board.

He reverted back to "safe" Alex against Washington, (4 attempts over 10 yards for 38 yards total) really wasn't aggressive against Oakland - that was a YAC game (2 attempts over 10 yards - JC wide open) - and he was downright terrible against Indy.
I don't necessarily agree with this.

Wetend to focus on attempts downfield when we talk about being more aggressive, myself included.

However, we also need to look at the kind of passes in the short game as well, and I remember coming away from those games feeling like he wasn't settling consistently for the safe pass, the checkdown.

He was, at least IMO, more willing to attempt passes to receivers who were "covered", attempting to "throw them open".

He still has to grow in that area, as well as the attcking the deep zones.

But I just don't think he was quite as conservative over those last 6-7 games as he had been for the previous 30 or so games.
