The Motorcycle Discussion Thread

I figure there are some motorcycle guys/gals on CP, so I thought we could have a place to talk all things Motorcycles.

Tire Mount and Balance Prices (as of 10/29/16)

Prices based on if you remove the wheels yourself and bring the wheels and new tires with you:

Cycle Gear - $35 per wheel if you buy tires from them. $58 per wheel if you buy tires elsewhere
Rawhide - $65 per wheel (assuming it would be the same at other HD dealers. they book it at 1/2 hr per wheel)
C R Cycle Tires (DeSoto) - $30 per wheel

Cheapest I've found my Michelin Commander II's. Seem like they have good prices on other brands too.
http://www.jakewilson.com - Free 3 day shipping on orders over $75

Good so far, though I haven't ridden as much as I normally would as I'm in the process of getting my badly warped front rotors swapped, new pads, and brake fluid flush. Ordered new rotors from RC components a little over a week ago via phone call, and they arrived today. But they were the wrong ****ing ones. Damn it. Gotta call them tomorrow and see what's up. Hope they still make the rotor to match my wheel. At least, the friction ring I mean. They want $370 per rotor for the full rotor and this is the third set in 29k miles that have warped. So they told me they sold the outer ring for $110 each but we're sorry about the issues and let me have the rings for $75 each. I hope they sell the rings I need. If they don't, I'm not buying another set of rotors, and I'm sure the rotors/wheels are proprietary. So, I might be in the market for a new wheel depending on how this shakes out.

Still getting used to this new machine of mine. Loving everything but the seat. It's pretty awful. I broke down and ordered a Corbin which should be here in a month or so. I'm counting the days!

I was able to sneak in a nice little ride to Rocheport, MO on Saturday. Took 24 Hwy out there from KC. Most of the way there, we were the only vehicles in sight. On the way, we stopped off at Arrow Rock, which was sort of neat. Not sure that I'd go 100 miles out of my way to see it, but if you're bored on I-70 and need a break, it's not too far away. The weather was perfect- not too hot, not too cold. We also got a good mix of laid-back riding and a little bit of hauling ass in as well. My riding buddy only had tinted goggles, so we were racing the sun back to KC.

Next up is a trip down to Fayetteville at the end of the month. Sounds like we are making a pit stop at Branson along the way. Anyone here know of some good back roads to take? My planned route is to take 13 South from Clinton to Springfield. After that, maybe 160 to 248 into Branson? Any better ideas or detours we should take?

Ouch.. sorry to hear that man. Even though the parts are pricey, I would imagine you are saving a bunch on labor. Still sucks that you're not able to get out there and ride though.

Luckily, I'm still able to ride it, it just doesn't brake as smooth as I'd like and grabs really bad at really low speeds. I'm the 3rd owner, and the 2nd owner is a riding bud of mine, so I know the rotors on there are the 3rd set - it just boggles my mind how these could be so prone to warping. I hope they still make a ring for my rotor hub/assembly; if not, well, I'm moving on . I'm not dropping $800 on new rotors (the 4th set) from RC Components.

....wish me luck today....I hope they make/sell just the ring lol Otherwise I might be selling a wheel. lol.

last time we went down via Springfield, we peeled off from 13 Southg onto 413 West / which turns into 413 South. Then 76 West to 39 South all the way through Shell Knob then East on 86 all the way to 65; then 65 N into Branson.

Good little run once you get into the lake area etc.

welp...called RC Components.

yeah....they don't make my rotor hub with the bolt pattern I need anymore. I need the 9 bolt pattern, but they no longer make it - they switched to a 5 bolt pattern a while back. So now I have to buy a new rotor hub if I want to get new rotors/rings on it. Normally $370 a piece, but given my circumstances / them not making it anymore, they're selling them to me at $200 each.

good lord, nothing is easy lol. This will be the 4th set of rotors going on it with less than 30k on the wheel set up....which is unacceptable to me. I'm going to give this a go and see. If they warp yet again, the wheel is coming off and being sold and I'll find some 2016 stock take offs to put on it. 4th set of rotors (3 by previous owner) is unacceptable to me. never had warping on any bike that I've had, sportbikes or otherwise. I realize there's a lot more weight on the HD for them to stop during braking...but still.

So my front brake job has turned into a $630 brake job. 550 for new rotors (400 for hubs and 150 for the rings), 60 for pads and about 20 for brake fluid.

so, for anyone wanting to go with an aftermarket set up on their ride...be wary. shit is expensive when it needs to be replaced. Sure, it looks cool....but be prepared for sticker shock when it comes time for maintenance.

Well so far this year I have spent a few grand on the old Road King Classic

New tires..Metzler 888 White Wall..you know the whole Classic look..so that's an extra $20 a tire..bastards

New rear shocks..Progressive 412..the cheaper ones but still improved the ride over the blown out original air shocks..it lowered the rear end a inch or two as well

Changed all 3 oils

Ordered a new windshield..Long Range Shields..has the recurve on top so it's supposed to help get the air over your head

Upgraded the fog lights to newer H4 bulbs and got new lenses..next is to do the same with the yellow grungy main headlight..might get an LED one for that

So all in with everything it is a much smoother riding and better visibility at night bike..lots cheaper than the $20,000 I almost spent on a 2016 Road Glide Special

you didn't get the RG?

I could've swore i saw a post where you got one. or maybe it was a picture of the one you were thinking about buying.

man, I know the used market on SG and RGs is yuuge.. I bet you could find one below $15k. I only paid $14k for mine and my brother bought his (apes, pipes, air ride, painted to match trunk, lower fairings, radio/blue tooth, and an extra set of wheels) for $15k for a 2012 with 20k miles. SG/RGs are a dime a dozen IMO. bikes with apes, pipes, and a 21" are not all that special anymore. problem is....people who are selling their RG/SG think theirs is the end all be all and think they're worth more than they really are. they think if they put $4k in goodies on it that it adds $4k in value. Nope...sorry.

after I button up my brakes, I should be good to go for a while w/out any big expenses. Put tires on in the fall, will have new rotors, pads, flushed brake fluid; did a 3 hole fluid change a month or so ago. So my pocket book will get a nice break.

I was about to buy one but when I went and talked to them about it they would not negotiate at all..they wouldn't even come down $500..they guy I started talking to was a complete dick and I just got up and told momma let's go..he said to me are you really going to let $500 to $1000 keep you from a new bike..I looked at him and said yep.. got to the truck and someone ran out said hold on let's talk..they were nicer but still wouldn't come off their price so I just left figured I would ride the Road King one more year

I have found some nice Road Glides but none that I want..I'm trying to find a 2014 or newer and a Special..I am wanting the upgrades they did with the Rushmore Project..manly the saddle bags and navigation system..plus they updated the fairing on the new models too and is supposed to help deflect wind a little better

yeah, i've been there done that. know that exact feeling. and I'm just like you - I walked. lol. I'm willing to pay what it's worth, and maybe a little more if it's the exact bike / already has all the goodies on it (pipes, apes, etc). Last year I was at one dealer and they wanted 20k for a bone stock 2013 SG; I told them I'd give them 17.5k, which was right at market price at the time - actually about $500 over - and they didn't even budge off the price . Oh well. They proceeded to call me nearly every week trying to get me to come back in because they got some other bikes in etc. I was like "nah...you guys weren't willing to even consider a negotiation so there's no point. I know what they're worth, what they're going for, and what I'm willing to pay. So beyond that, we don't have much to talk about" lol. Then they throw out the "well come in, we'll make the numbers work". I said "dude...let me worry about the numbers/payment/term". I'm not terming out a bike for some reeruned term just so they can sell a bike for more than it's already worth.

yeah, ride that RK for another year or whatever, and let more and more used RGS hit the used market. Keep an eye on the used market in the meantime so you can watch how the prices inflate around this time of year, and significantly deflate the end of October each year. Plus, buying private party, saved me about $1500 in sales tax.

I like the newer RG fairings, how they're re-shaped. Not a fan at all of the older ones, but the newer ones look awesome.

I'm the same way I watch the market..I check prices on NADA Kelly Blue Book look at other dealers close to see if they have something similar that is a little cheaper to try and work a deal..I won't overpay for anything ever again..I did that when I was about 18 on a car and didn't realize how badly I was raped until a few years later and I looked back at the contract..it was violent..like prison rape would seem like honeymoon sex

I look about once a week to see if I can find something but I don't expect too much right now with riding season hitting..that jumps price up and leaves less room for negotiations..I figure around Christmas time or beginning of the year will be my hard shopping time..people will have traded in their 14-16 bikes for the new 107 bikes and dealers will want to move them out to get new inventory in

Yeah, my brother got his deal via private party back in mid December. We both remember seeing it for sale in August for $3k more.

Riding this weekend..probably Saturday. Tentatively going to Topeka HD and riding wherever from there. Gotta get off my ass and try to organize a Chiefsplanet run somewhere for some bbq or something once the weather finally breaks.
