Q&A with Romeo Crennel 12/21

Q&A with Romeo Crennel 12/21

OPENING REMARKS: “Good morning. Young lady how are you? Today starts the serious preparation for the Raiders. It was game plan day, scouting report, game plan and so we talked to those guys about what we feel like we have to do to win the game. The Raiders are a physical team, they have big guys along the front and they have a lot of speed at the skill positions and at the back end and they try to utilize all of that in the way they play and so we know that we need to be ready. That was one of the messages that I talked to those guys about is be ready on Saturday because sometimes that body clock, you get on a schedule and we’ve been playing on Sunday and all of that but now we are going to play on Saturday so we need to speed up that clock a little bit so that we can be ready to play Saturday and be able to get off to a good start from the kickoff, from when the whistle blows, start good and continue to be good throughout the game so that was the message to the guys this morning. And for them to understand that this Raider team, they are in the same situation we are, they need to win like we need to win and they’ll be ready to go. And so what we have to do is we have to put the best effort out there, we really have to play our best game of the year and so that’s what I talked to them about and try to get that done and hopefully they listened and they took it in and they will apply it in their preparation today, tomorrow, Friday and then put it out there on Saturday and be the best that we can be.”

Q: What has made Ryan Succop so reliable, is it his work ethic or how he approaches things?

CRENNEL: “Well I think you said it. It’s his work ethic, the way he approaches his job, the way he goes about it. He takes it very seriously and any time that he feels like he’s off, he’ll do extra work, kick extra balls, work with the holder and the snapper and everything he can do, he’ll do it to try and be the best on game day and it’s showing up in the results.”

Q: What do you feel comfortable with for his range?

CRENNEL: “Generally, it always depends on the conditions but if we can get him inside the 35 we think that we have a chance.”

Q: Was it easy for you to tell that Carson Palmer was the new guy on the team that last time you played the Raiders?

CRENNEL: “Yes. As the game went along you could tell that he wasn’t on with his receivers and there was some nuances about the offense that were different and he had to get used to them. As I look at him now it looks like he is used to them, he knows the receivers, he knows the runners, he knows the system and I thought last week he did a really good job of getting the ball to the playmakers, by what Detroit was giving him and probably should have won the game even though they didn’t but he had a chance. He missed a guy on the sideline at the end of the game that would have put it out of reach and then at the end they still had a chance to drive it down to attempt a field goal but they couldn’t quite get it done but I thought he operated the offense effectively last week.”

Q: If there is one player that you can give your team an extensive scouting report on, it’s Carson Palmer who you faced twice a year for four years.

CRENNEL: “Yes. He’s very consistent, he studies, he knows what the defense will give him, how they are trying to attack him and he uses his weapons very well.”

Q: Are there some similarities between what Palmer did and what Kyle Orton is doing?

CRENNEL: “Carson has had a couple of more games under his belt with that team. If Kyle continues the way he has I think that you can say that.”

Q: Was the way that Orton played last week beyond what you had reason to expect from him?

CRENNEL: “To be totally honest, yes. Because he had a finger, hadn’t practiced a whole lot, was new to the team and new to the system. The thing that I knew about him was I knew he was a pro quarterback and has played in games in the NFL before and has a good arm and so those things we knew about him but we didn’t know how it was going to play out on game day and it played out very well but you just don’t know sometimes.”

Q: Now you expect it again this week?

CRENNEL: “Definitely.” [Laughter]

Q: Injury wise how are you?

CRENNEL: “Jon McGraw is the guy who may not practice today or he’ll be limited today in practice but otherwise the guys have normal bumps and bruises but I think everybody will practice.”

Q: Nothing significant came out of the Green Bay game?

CRENNEL: “Nope. Knock wood you know. We’ve got two days here for those guys to show up if anything significant was going to show up and nothing has shown up.”

Q: Is the attitude around here that if you’re hurt it doesn’t matter you’ve got to practice and you’ve got to play?

CRENNEL: “The thing is the player needs to practice to play and show that he can practice so that you know that he can play. And generally what you do is that you give the guys some benefit of the doubt if he’s proven to you that he can perform with a little less practice time. So when you have a veteran guy, generally a veteran guy is the guy that you’ll give that benefit of the doubt to. Sometimes rookies, they don’t know what they don’t now and you might not take chance on those guys but you just have to get a feel for the player. If the player is honest with you and you develop that trust then you can say okay well he hasn’t practiced all week but I think he’ll perform at a high level on Sunday then you say okay we’ll let you play. But if you don’t develop that trust and you let the guy play and he lets you down then that says that well probably I’m not going to do it the next time. So you’ve got to develop that trust and veterans will get the benefit of the doubt over younger players.”

Q: Are you going to approach any of the practices in any different way because you are playing on Saturday instead of Sunday?

CRENNEL: “Tomorrow normally is a third-down emphasis, it will continue to be third-down emphasis but we are going to add red zone to it tomorrow because effectively tomorrow is the last practice day because on Friday it’s more of a polish, walk-through day. So we’ll move red zone into tomorrow’s practice.”

Q: The guys on Sunday talked about your positive outlook and positive energy, is that your general disposition or is that something you learned through coaching?

CRENNEL: “Generally I’m a positive guy, my glass is half full.”

Q: Of what?

CRENNEL: “I don’t know. That depends on whether we win or not.” [Laughter]

"Q: (Full) Of what?

CRENNEL: 'I don’t know. That depends on whether we win or not.' [Laughter]"

That's pretty cool
