Nine Inch Nails New Album, "Hesitation Marks" Available on 9/3/13

Any other NIN fans here? Trent will be releasing a new album, "Hesitation Marks." available on 9/3/13. The single (youtube below) is titled, "Came Back Haunted." I think it's alright. Not totally thrilled, but it's not bad. If anything, it's refreshing to hear new NIN stuff in general. IMO, you can hear the Skinny Puppy influence in this song. Also kind of reminds me of what little I've heard from his "prior to NIN" band, Exotic Birds. Can't pinpoint why, exactly.

Here's what it really comes down to:

Trent Reznor is Trent Reznor. After 20+ years, he's not going to "surprise" you anymore. There are no more tricks, no more angst, no more aggression and no more attitude that he can convey in 2013 that he couldn't convey in the early 90's.

So, it's just a matter of "Do you like the songs?".

At this point, two decades in, he's like Tom Petty or Pearl Jam or any number of artists whose careers have spanned decades. Either you connect with the new music or you don't. It's really as simple as that.

If you don't, at least you have a lifetime of memories from his earlier music.

Right on. Exactly the thinking I've had listening to pearl jam since No Code. After an album or two, bands are no longer young and angry....they mature. It is what it is.

Yeah....Reznor is like Manson for me. Loved both of their music when I was growing up but now I just listen to them because of who they are. There is no more anger or hate in their music. That shit has passed them by.

The one thing that Reznor has over Manson is that Trent does some awesome soundtrack work.

If I had a nickel for every time Trent has used the word, "disappear" in his songs since With Teeth, I'd have like $5. And I could use that $5 right now.

Btw, have listened to it several times over by now. I like it. I'm not crazy about it, but I like it. To me, I like it about as much as I like Year Zero...probably a tiny bit more. It sounds nothing like Year Zero. It sounds nothing like anything he has ever done, IMO. So many people are so quick to compare it to TDS...which baffles me... I have come to the conclusion that the only reason for this is the similarities between the beginnings of "Copy of A" and "Heresy," both songs located towards the beginning of their albums. That is the only connection I see between the two albums. Speaking of "Copy of A," it is hands down, the highlight of the album.

Some of the other songs are growing on me...I have more patience with this one than I was able to compile with Year Zero and definitely The Slip. I would place this album above those two on my personal NIN album ranking. It is DEFINITELY worth checking out. Like I said, it is very, very different than anything I've heard from NIN. My guess is that he may lose some of his more hard-core fans who lust for another TDH, Broken or Fragile, but may gain a few new fans who are open-minded enough to not disregard NIN as nothing, but a "goth" band and take the chance and check it out. I hate to say it, but some of the new fans may consist of these self-righteous, pretentious hipster douchebags.

This album seems to have a bit of a Kanye-esque vibe to it at times. It's different. Worth checking out, though.

A good record costs a lot of money to create. There are studio costs, gear rentals, producer and engineer fees, maintenance, tech's, etc. and so on. Even these days, a "real" record still costs $250-300k to produce, if you're using Top-Line talent. That's a lot of album sales these days at $9.99 in order for the Artist and label to recoup, and that's before any profit.

Illegal downloading will only diminish NIN-type releases because no one wants to work for free.
Hey, sitting here thinking and also became curious as to what your thoughts are, not only to the concept of piracy itself, but also your thoughts on the method Trent chose to confront/respond to the issue via his quote you posted. Thanks in advance, dude.

I like it too a lot. Probably go ahead and pay for it, it's worth it. Tracks 2, 3, and 4 are the best imo, 4 is my favorite. The music on 4 kind of reminds me of some of the slower creepy Manson stuff.

pretty much. but I would have expected some sonic creativity on this and better songwriting. to me, this sounds like a girly album.

#7 is really growing on me.

#'s: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are all solid (love that intro #1 leading into Copy of A). The last 3 or 4 songs kind of seem interchangeable to me, but it may grow on me as well.

The more I listen, the more I dig it.

God I'd love to go to the KC show on the 30th. Haven't seen them since The Downward Spiral tour in Springfield years ago. They wouldn't dream of ever coming here again. Sucks we used to get some really big acts, back in high school through my early 20's I saw NIN, Manson, Tool...now all we get is shit like 311, Godsmack, Five Finger DP, etc.

I think this is my all-time favorite NIN song now. This album is amazing, definitely top 3.

Not a big weed smoker, but...this song on a good system or headphones when you're stoned is wonderful. I'd also recommend this one in such a state:
