Faneca gets his payday...
The New York Jets signed unrestricted free-agent guard Alan Faneca, a five-times All-Pro, on a five-year contract on Monday.
The deal is estimated by local media to be worth $40 million, making the former Pittsburgh Steelers player among the league's highest-paid offensive linemen. http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080303/...ts_faneca_dc_1 |

I'd put them as having one of the worst offseasons thus far. They are killing themselves with these contracts.

“I hate him. Everybody says I’m supposed to be polite when I talk to you all, but I hate him,” Jenkins said. “He talks too much, he doesn’t make sense, he’s fat, he’s sloppy, he acts like he’s the best thing since sliced bread. He’s ugly, he stinks, his mouth stinks, his breath stinks, and basically his soul stinks, too.

Mangini and Tannenbaum are clearly breaking the bank to save their skins. I don't necessarily disagree with any particular signing, but it sure isn't exactly how the Patriots built their teams. Of course, the Jets didn't get lucky with a 6th round HOF QB pick either.
Both Woody and Faneca are the wrong side of 30, and Woody has had staying-in-shape issues. Jenkins is a beast when healthy, but has historically played a 4-3 one gap style, and has had trouble staying healthy. If they're figuring him for a 3-4 nose in a two gap style, they better have a decent backup ready to go. Jenkins turns 29 just before this season starts. I havent' analyzed the guaranteed contract amounts, but a few things we know: 1. their offensive line will be better this year (would be hard to be worse) 2. their defense hasn't yet been fixed (they had ALOT of issues, especially at DL/LB. 3. they're desperate to turn things around quickly before the owner loses patience. 4. these contracts will be a pretty big pain in the ass about 3 years from now.

I agree they are both good now. It's the guaranteed money, age combo that I question. Jets fans will love this deal for the next two years, at least. 3 or 4 down the road, however, and it may be a cap problem. But given their situation, I'm not surprised Mangini and Tannenbaum are opening up the wallet. They gotta get better in a hurry. P.S. I'm not happy about these two signings if they draft McFadden. That could be a nasty run game they'd be able to put together.
