Chiefs playing it smart...

I believe that the last question pretty well sums it up.

Chiefs play it smart on free-agent signings

Any Chiefs fans upset because the Chiefs haven’t gone crazy with free-agent signings this year should be grateful.

The Chiefs have blown millions of dollars on senseless free-agent signings over the years under the wrongful thinking they were just “one or two players away” from making a big postseason run.

That type of philosophy has not only wasted money, but it has severely distracted the team from building a contender the proper way — through the draft.

The truth is, the Chiefs haven’t been “one or two players away” since the mid-1990s. Not even the Dick Vermeil-Al Saunders teams could be considered that close to the Super Bowl — not with the Chiefs’ horrid defense from those years.

Herm Edwards figured out pretty early on in this job that he needed to almost completely rebuild the Chiefs. And you don’t do that through free-agency.

Finally, it would appear the Chiefs are determined to develop a quarterback they drafted and build a team around him through the draft. And they have 10 picks this year to make a dent in that rebuilding process.

Of course, the question remains: Are Edwards and Carl Peterson and the Chiefs’ scouting department good enough to cash in on those draft picks?

I understand why people hate Carl, but the one thing he has done while in KC is let the HC bring in his own type of players. That philosophy didn't work with DV, DV looked for good people, not great players. I also think Carl's stepping in and drafting LJ clearly indicates that approach because the one time he asserted him self in a personal decision it created an issue wit the team.

Carl's philosophy was a recipie for disaster with Gunther and DV, but I think it works well with HCs like Marty and Herm. I'm excited about the draft because I know Herm will select some great players.

Heck look at Herm's first two drafts and there are only 2 picks that stil are not on the team, Medlock and Maxie, 2 fifth rounders.

On the flipside, Carl is the reason why this team needs to be gutted and start from scratch.

Read the following on www.profootballweekly.com

We hear the Chiefs are taking a good look at free-agent OGs Jake Scott and Rex Hadnot. Both have been told by their old clubs — the Colts and Dolphins, respectively — that they aren’t in the teams’ future plans. However, with as pressing a concern as the offensive line is, it’s surprising that the Chiefs aren’t taking a more aggressive approach on the matter

TOTAL BS! Only AFTER the season was lost did he "get it." He and everyone else calling for a re-build backed into it and didn't have the stones to set the course from the beginning last season. And now, we're supposed to believe that those SAME people can get the re-build right???

To be fair though, his draft picks still isn't great. It's a hell of a improvement over Vermeil, (so far) but it's really nothing to get excited about.

2006:
RD1 - Tamba Hali - DE - Solid. Still needs a breakout year.
RD2 - Bernard Pollard - S - Not looking good. Still haven't shown me anything, other than being a ST'mer
RD3 - Brodie Croyle - QB - Too early to tell. This year, provided he starts all games, should tell us more about him.
RD5 - Marcus Maxey - CB - Great pick. No longer on the team.
RD6a - Tre Stallings - OT - Too early to tell.
RD6b - Jeff Webb - WR - Not looking too hot. Hasn't shown me anything thus far.
RD7 - Jarred Paige - S - Good value in the 7th. Hopefully he'll improve.

2007:
RD1 - Dwayne Bowe - WR - Excellent pick thus far. Needs to continue to improve.
RD2 - Turk McBride - DE - Not looking good thus far.
RD3 - Tank Tyler - DT - See above.
RD5a - Justin Medlock - K - EXCELLENT PICK! No longer with the team. We passed Crosby over for him?
RD5b - Kolby Smith - RB - Solid. Would like for him to continue to improve.
RD6 - Herbert Taylor - OT - Too early to tell.
RD7 - Michael Allan - TE - Too early to tell.

The problem is that you don't know how good your draft picks can be, if you're playing a washed up 35+ year old players in front of them, with no upside at all.

How long have you been a Chiefs fan?

It was PAINFULLY obvious that Herm WANTED to play the young player LAST year, but that CARL dropped the hammer. Carl fought the rebuild, because he didn't want to spend his last years here not getting to his benchmark of 8-8.

I guess it's just coincidence that one of the first bits of news to come after the season was that Carl would be staying out of the personnel issues and leave them to Herm, Kuharich and the scouting department.

Just because most of Herm's picks are still with the team doesn't make him a great talent evaluator. His team did finish 4-12 last year.

Uhh Yeah but then later was reported that he would be as involved as he ever has been.

Source? Because this hasn't been a typical Carl Peterson offseason. He's working under strict orders from Clark, IMO.

Regardless, TEX is pointing in the wrong direction.

Have the Chiefs or CP ever made an actual statement that CP would have less involvement in player personnel? Seriously, I have read different versions of that here.

What is the actual truth?

That wasn't Herms team. That was CP's last attempt at a patchwork season, with his aging vets. CP adopted DV's mentallity of "owing" the veterans more playing time because they are "good people". Now it is time to bring in real football players with the killer instinct. I was great to watch the Chiefs run up and down the field on offense, however that got us what......One division title, the oldest team in the NFL, the worst Defense in the NFL, and still 0 playoff wins..It it time to copy the Manual that the NY Giants and GB Packers used, Sign 1-3 FA in key spots, build through the draft, and retain your stars.

Actually I think Chuck cook and the scouting department have done a nice job of finding talent in later rounds of the draft over the years.

Where the Chiefs have struggled is allowing the HC and coordinators such a strong voice in the early rounds.

Gunt might be the worst talent evaluator to ever get a say in who is drafted.

Lock that stupid MFer in the basement that weekend.
